Please halp? (Skyrim spoilers (for Civil War questline))

[personal profile] inkmage 2013-01-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
First off, I learned something today. If you have stayed up until 4 AM the previous night, and complain about it to your friends, they will ask why. The answer you should probably not give them is a drowsy, half-aware, "Reading Skyrim porn." Also, it will not be as easy as you think to backpedal out of having said this. *facepalm*

But I need help, F!S. I have the Jagged Crown and started off being a Stormcloak, but I'm aware that I can "cash in" the crown for a place in the Imperial Legion. My problem is this: I don't know which side to pick.

I mean, religious freedom is nice, but so is not being racist. And either way the fucking Thalmor win. But both sides have good points and I just keep going back and forth and I can't decide ARGH. And on the one hand Ulfric's a great guy and he has that heartwrenching speech on why he's doing all this, but on the other Jarl Balgruuf's really cool too and I don't want to disappoint him and I'm pretty sure if I'm a Stormcloak I have to take over his city.

(I'm aware I could make another character and do both, but I like to play the first character I make with my actual feelings on whatever subject, and leave the RPing for later ones.)

So, those of you that have played Skyrim, which did you choose and why? Or if you haven't played Skyrim but know generally what's going on, which do you think I should choose and why? (Note that I haven't played beyond getting the Jagged Crown, so please keep spoilers past there to a minimum.)

if i ever pick a side, it's almost always the stormcloaks. you can maintain neutrality in the war, in case you weren't aware and would prefer that route; you instead act as a mediator later on. i always play a mer character of some sort so from a realistic standpoint it seems like a weird choice. but i don't like the thalmor and i don't like the restrictions they place on religion. those issues are more important to me than the stormcloaks being hella racist.

plus the legion tried to cut my head off, so there's that.

You can stay neutral? I mean, I know there's the main questline where you organize a truce, but can the Civil War actually end without the PC taking a side?

I started off going with the Stormcloaks, because religious freedom and the Legion tried to cut my head off and I'm playing an Altmer so I'm assuming that I was trying to escape the Dominion in the first place (hence crossing the border).

On the other hand, the Empire's grasp is slipping, so what happens if it falls? The Aldmeri Dominion is pretty much poised to take over.... And Windhelm, plus probably some other places to a lesser extent, is sort of an awful place to live if you're not a Nord, and I feel like the Empire would help with that a lot. Ulfric doesn't seem to care.

Damn Thalmor. If they didn't exist I'd just side with the Imperials, but if they didn't exist the War probably wouldn't be happening either. I wish I could just finish the Dark Brotherhood storyline and then go off and assassinate all the high-ranking Aldmeri officials and burn the damn Concordat.

The devil and the deep blue sea....

yeah, you just have to not join the stormcloaks or the legion lmao. you still have to mediate later on but it's about as neutral as you can get in the war.

i always end up joining the dark brotherhood even when i'm trying to be a "good" character so that makes the choice between both sides a little easier for me, for spoilery reasons.

i think the legion has a noble cause but yeah the thalmor really muck it up.

Yeah, I'm trying to do everything the first time through, plus I like progression in the world. It makes it seems more "alive" than just having an eternal Civil War.

(I just realized that in Skyrim, the Civil War could also be classed as "The War of Northern Agression," only, well. XD)

I'm in the middle of the Dark Brotherhood questline (well, I just started it, but same thing), so maybe that'll influence me when I finish it. (But thanks for not spoiling me!)

I feel like "Damn Thalmor" is going to become a fairly constant refrain for me here....

I chose Imperials because I believed they are actually as pissed as the Nords about the ban on Talos. It sucks that things are the way they are, but if the Empire can't be kept together the Aldmeri Dominion will be even more brutal than it already is.

I know. And I'm all for Dunmer and Argonians and Khajiit not being discriminated against. I feel like, having learned more, I'm started to side with the Empire - it's just, if the Empire wins, the Thalmor will be stronger anyway, since they're more or less turning the Empire into their puppet.

So which is better, an Aldmeri Dominion that is working behind the scenes, and making people miserable without having an outlet for that misery, or one that is actually bearing down with everything it has on Skyrim, but doing it openly and giving Skyrim a chance - however small and futile - to fight back?

Though given Nordic culture they might do that anyway.

DA - and potiental spoilers depending on what side quests/storylines you've done [specifically the black hand one]

I'd honestly say the empire. Remember, for all that it was almost beaten, they still managed to push the Dominion hard enough that they were willing to agree to a peace [a relatively light one from what the White-gold concordat terms seem to have been*].

Plus, the empire is pretty savvy when it comes to politics and political intrigue. Point in fact, savvy enough that the emperor knows ahead of time that he's going to be assassinated even warned his body guards that trying to stop it wouldn't work, and stated that it had to happen. All of that implies that there is a huge amount of behind the scenes intrigue, and that they know how to handle it. Plus, in terms of military strength, the empire just flat out has a larger population to draw on if it comes to that.

If you go with the Nords, on the other hand, they don't seem to be as inclined to know how to handle something like that [not that they can't - just that they have less experience it seems since they're culture seems more geared to honor and open combat]. Plus, you have to remember that they'd be dealing with a force that all but took down a much larger force than Skyrim. Even at full strength it's dubious how long they could hold out - and the Stormcloaks wouldn't *be* at full strength. A lot of jarls are against Ulfric and plenty more are torn in the middle, and Ulfric makes no bones about the fact that in his mind if you aren't with him, you're against him. So, chances are both the ones actually against him and the ones trying to remain neutral will be replaced. That would, from what I remember, lead to a lot of resentment on top of dislike for how he killed the former high king. I think it would even be possible that it would start another civil war if he ended up the winner of this one, crown or no crown.

*Yes, I know. Outlawing a religion and letting the Thalmor chase people down. However, remember - considering the Thalmor was ~about to crush the empire~ those really are *light* terms. They could have demanded the empire hand over large amounts of land, and even cut the size of the empire's army. The fact that the empire might have decided to continue fighting at those terms implies, to me at least, that the Dominion took some pretty heavy hits as well.

Also, allowing someone to do something =/= helping then

tl;dr: I think the empire is far better equiped to handle the situation than the Stormcloaks.

(I haven't done the Black Hand storyline yet, and I'm in the middle of the Dark Brotherhood one, which apparently is related to the Civil War in some way, so I'll edit this comment when I have, if no one's replied, with my reaction to what you've said. I really don't want spoilers.)

But as to your first paragraph - yeah, I think I'll probably go with the Empire at this point. The more I see of the Stormcloaks vs. the Empire, the less I'm liking the Stormcloaks.

I usually choose the imperials. While yeah, religious freedom and all, they don't really seem to actually crack down too hard on the Talos worship, and [at least from what I remember] it really comes off as lip service to the Thalmor to get a peace agreement to end a war that was about to *destroy* the empire - and would have, potentially, lead to Skyrim [and the rest of the empire] to being ruled by the Thalmor. Who I doubt would have been anywhere near as nice as the empire was about a lot of things [iirc].

I think I will side with the Imperials at this point, both because they seem like they'll give the Thalmor the least good option if they win, and also because I value racial equality more than religious freedom here.

But apparently I should finish the Dark Brotherhood storyline first, because it has spoilers in it, so that's what I'll do.
