Cosplaying characters of different races

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Is it viewed as offensive to cosplay a character of a different race as long as you don't use makeup or anything else to change your skin tone?

I wouldn't think so? I mean, since the biggest objection to it has to do with historical connotations to using things to change your skin tone, I don't think *not* changing it would upset people - unless they just think that cosplayers should 'stick to their own race' when cosplaying.

Not at all! It's the same as cosplaying a character of the opposite gender. Some snobs might get huffy that you're 100% the character but that's because they think the costume is all that makes a character. Just go out and have fun with it, that's what cosplay is about!

It's not offensive to the mainstream, but there is a fringe which would accuse you of appropriation.

If you're white and cosplaying a POC, there are some asshats who'll get bent out of shape about it, generally because they think everything white people do is racist. But on a logical level, there's nothing wrong with it - technically most (non-Japanese) cosplays involve people cosplaying somebody of a different race, since most English-speaking cosplayers aren't Japanese or whatever fictional race the character is. If you want to do it, go for it!

Nope! There will for sure be a small few who complain about it, but they're the crazy fringe so ignore them.

It is FAR better to not colour your skin if cosplaying as someone of a different race, than it would be to colour yourself.

The only exception for colouring your skin is if the character is distinctly non-human and isn't based on any actual race. So painting yourself brown to cosplay Katara is bad because the Water Tribe is based on the Inuit, but painting yourself grey to cosplay a Homestuck troll is fine.
