(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)Just like Arcana Famiglia, Hakuoki or Amnesia are not about mafia and their dealings/ shinsenigumi and their impact on history of their country/ slice of life about dealing with amnesia, as they could appear from a description, but about bunch of HotBoiz swooning over main heroine. It becomes apparent after 2 episodes, in which they prove to not follow any plot, just random happenings with HotBoiz.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 02:28 am (UTC)(link)If you want plot, stay away from sport manga/anime, since the 'plot' is always the same (with some small difference here and there so it doesn't seem generic): get stronger, win against rivals, win a tournament. END.
OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)That said, Oofuri and Kurobasu are both sports anime, so they do at least have something in common (I admit that K is the odd one out here), and I find it ridiculously hard to believe that a show that had an English line of "THIS IS JAPANESE LUNCH TIME RUSH" is drama and Oofuri isn't. Oofuri is more slice-of-life, yes, but it deals with some deep topics. It's pretty condescending to classify it as strictly humor.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)(I didn't classify it as humor, btw--Wikipedia did. Like I said, I've only seen bits and pieces, and I wasn't interested because of the sports.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)I'm not actually judging them for liking it - or at least, I'm trying not to. I don't mean to come off that way. They're free to enjoy what they want, after all. I'm just sad that they won't give something else with a lot of hoyay a chance when cute/innocent shipping actually seems right up their alley. ("Creaming themselves" was a bad choice of words, since I've no idea what they do with their ships. "Squee over" is generally what I've actually seen them do.)
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 01:59 am (UTC)(link)Same thing is at play here. Kuroko characters maybe the same age as Oofuri, or they can be even younger. But they don't look their age, and thus the brain can process them as adult.

This is, first off, the best fandom I have ever been a part of! I have made some of the best friends in it, it has a surprisingly good amount of fanfic for how small the non-Japanese fanbase is, there is TONS of fan art (most of it actually fluffy cute although there is some porn too tbh-- hard not to have that when in episode #2 one of the boys stands up in the bus and is all "oh no I forgot to masturbate!").
Also: a love of sports or baseball is NOT REQUIRED to enjoy Oofuri. Oofuri does its work well in making baseball seem fun, even to people who otherwise could care less about sports. This is not just me: a lot of fans come into Oofuri without caring about baseball at all.
But forgetting about the fandom, the anime series is just GOOD. It's animated by A1 Pictures, who also animates series such as Ao no Exorcist, Shin Sekai Yori, AnoHana, Tsuritama, Magi: the Labyrinth of Magic... several well known series from recent years. The storyline is just the most refreshingly honest and realistic portrayal of high school life I've seen in anime, and it's just exceedingly sweet and full of amazingly complex characters... the complexity of the characterization is something I had never expected going into it, but wow it's just AMAZING.
But anyway, if you are real serious about wanting to be convinced, I actually wrote a nearly 10,000 word ship manifesto for the main Oofuri pairing a couple years back. Despite being a shipping manifesto I also consider it a manifesto to sell the series just in general, because I explain some of the basic plot things and try my best to show why it's something that is TRULY TRULY WONDERFUL and why I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
My manifesto can be found here and at the bottom of the page I list all sorts of links to fandom resources that would be good for a new fan/potential fan to look into.
Right now the fandom is kind of in a quiet stage, mostly I think because we are all waiting for the third anime series to be announced. I have no doubts whatsoever that one WILL be announced. Oofuri is VERY popular in Japan, both as an anime and a manga, and even though the second series wasn't licensed for non-Japanese audiences, it did very well in it's own home country, and that's really all it takes to feel sure that more will eventually coming down the pipe.

how can I forget
my most shameful love of all
TAKII/ROKA
(I know I know, Roka is EVIL, the only truly bad guy character of all of Oofuri, but I tend to be drawn to guys like that so long as they are not real and are just characters.)
... and also lots of other pairings that I just neglected to mention.
ANYWAY HOWEVER. EVERY CHARACTER IS BASICALLY WONDERFUL.
Do you really want me to go on about other characters? I am more than happy to go on about any characters. XDDDD

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 02:46 am (UTC)(link)probably the only person who would prefer Suyama/Sakaeguchi over Abe/Mihashi but every ship is its own thing I don't even mind
