I really wanted to like either of them, but god DA2's writing was so bad.

Words cannot express how much I disagree with you. The writing of DA2 is brilliant, the characters are brilliant, and the dialogue is amazing. I'm sorry, but no. David Gaider is a fucking god at writing, and the narrative itself was superior to DA:O - the problem was that the plot wasn't epic and the game needed another year or two in development. Of all the criticisms that DA2 can accept (and there are many), the writing is NOT one of them.

And the lack of an epic plot is only a problem if you like epic plots. I personally prefer more scaled down plots like Bioshock or DA2.

ia. It's just a hard contrast to DA:O, where you are saving the whole world, then in DA2 you're just saving a city. But there's only so many times you can save the world in a decade, and I personally did enjoy the smaller scale of DA2 - my favorite arc was the Qunari plot. I just think if the game had more time in development, the whole thing would've been more fleshed out and feel epic regardless. Still, I've heard DA2 described more as a "character drama" than a typical "hero saves the world" drama, and I like that a lot.

Yeah, it all just felt so much more personal, I love my Hawke, I'm indifferent towards any of my wardens.

I dunno man. Like the rest of the game, the plot and characterization was some compelling points under a giant mess. Like whoever it was who wrote Anders and I think Bethany? Good god.

I think Anders is overall one of the best characters? Lol. I know he had a different writer in DA2 than Awakening, but the development of the character between those two games, and how you can see what he's going to become in Awakening... awesome.

That being said, I do think the mage vs templar thing was a little over-milked, and it would've been nice to see more alternate things for the characters to react to, but even with that, Anders is very far from one-dimensional..
