I really wanted to like either of them, but god DA2's writing was so bad.

no

Words cannot express how much I disagree with you. The writing of DA2 is brilliant, the characters are brilliant, and the dialogue is amazing. I'm sorry, but no. David Gaider is a fucking god at writing, and the narrative itself was superior to DA:O - the problem was that the plot wasn't epic and the game needed another year or two in development. Of all the criticisms that DA2 can accept (and there are many), the writing is NOT one of them.

They both had pretty good reasons for being the way they were, so I personally thought it made the relationships feel realistic. It's cool if you want a perfect boyfriend with no flaws, but I'd personally find that kinda boring.

And it's not like the female LIs were all sunshine and rainbows, you know!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the OP was saying they wanted them without flaws - just that she didn't like the fact they were both fanatics.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
We expect them to have some flaws. The point is their fanaticism. Wouldn't be so bad if one was fanatic, the other some other characteristic.

Agreed! I really liked DA2. Hell I loved both games, and still play them to this day. I wish we had more games like them, I wish we had more games with more romance options. We need more more more!

...SWTOR...I am disappoint. >_>

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
One person's 'flaw' is another person's 'dealbreaker', and vice versa.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I just found them both boring and went off to romanice Isabela instead.

I liked all the characters in the game a lot, they were all extremely developed and had their share of quirks, flaws, and strengths. Except maybe Bethany, or maybe that's just a stark contrast to the fact that she's so normal and therefore boring. lol

But yeah, as much as I love gay sex with Anders and Fenris, it is interesting how none of the love interests are "normal", and even though Isabela and Merrill are pretty insane and NOT good real life relationship material, the lads tend to be a lot more difficult to get along with.

It would've been nice to be able to romance Varric and Aveline, as they are the only members of your party that'd be decent people to hang around with in real life. They'd offer a more "sane" alternative to the otherwise crazy love interests.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Varric would have been awesome~ But I think he was supposed to have some backstory as to why he didn't get into relationships or something [idk if that was like a dropped plot-line or what. Just that it was hinted at from time to time in the banter.]

Preach. *sigh* I regularly want to slap Anders (and not in a sexy way), and Fenris is just too much like an emo teen (yes, he has every right to be damaged and bitter, but he's just so... irritatingly emo teen about it).

Not that that was the worst part about DA2, though. Inquistion better be improvement.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
God, this. So much this.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Inquisition is going to be exactly like DAO- complete shit that appeals to people who like complete shit like DA:O.

I like my fictional love interests crazy and damaged so I kind of dug it (even if they both grated on me at many points). But, tbf, the other LIs had flaws and issues as well. I hear what you're saying though. Like, maybe we could have just one balanced individual as a LI?

I have to admit though that even while Fenris made me want to smack him sometimes, he still managed to be more well adjusted than I probably would have been if I had a life like his.

I just love how everyone ignores how fucked up the Chantry is, like they can understand Fenris being a whiny little bitch, because he was a slave, but growing up being told you're a monster and being incarcerated your entire life unless you go on the run at which point people will chase you, and oh yaah they have the ability to give you a magical lobotomy? No biggie, Anders is a whiny fanatic.
I'm not bitter or anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I guess we have been in different parts of the fandom because I've seen a loooooot of anders fic/fans that treat him as the most damaged misunderstood woobie ever

Why do you get the impression everyone ignores the Chantry's problems? I don't think anyone disagrees that the Chantry has major issues it needs to work out, but people absolutely have the right to disagree with Anders' actions at the end of the game, which I imagine is the reason for a good portion of the hate directed at Anders. In order to incite a rebellion he committed an act of terrorism. I love the character, but what he did was abaolsutely disgusting.

I don't ignore it. I'm utterly unsympathetic having been dragged through a third act involving excessive melodrama, nonsensical character actions, and player-character coercion summing up, ultimately, to a half-assed discourse on the nature of oppression that's a prelude to a couple of boss fights and contrasting end-game narrative.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The point of them being fanatics, though, was that they were Hawke's direct personal connection to the genocidal shitstorm unfolding in the city. All of your friends/siblings were on one side or the other to some degree, except Varric and Isabella, who didn't give a shit and only went where the money was.

So... you think being a pirate who doesn't give a fuck if there is a civil war with innocents being slaughtered because she's too fucking selfish to give back a stupid book she doesn't even need or the cute girl who thinks Blood Magic, demons and a magical artifact (that previously killed one or two of her tribe) are totally fluffy bunnies and cotton candy if you only ask nice enough are any less crazy?
