Holy shit, Baby-sitters Club! And huh, people hate Dawn? She wasn't my favorite character, but I never disliked her. And she gets automatic cool points for living in a house with a secret passage. I wanted to live in a house with a secret passage so badly when I was a kid.

I loved Dawn, personally, but on second reading I've come to realize she was basically a Social Justice Warrior. Also, in her "darker and edgier" spinoff she kind of became selfish, deserting a friend because the friend wasn't "cool" anymore and stuff.

I don't know if I ever read the spinoff. I could see how people would read her as SJW-like, though. I remember enjoying the fact that she was into "saving the earth" as a kid, since I was the somewhat annoying, slightly naggy kid in my family who fancied herself to be environmentally conscious.

Yes! The secret passage! And I always thought she was more interesting than Mary Anne, but maybe I'm crazy. And I liked the book where Dawn was back in California and ran her own West Coast BSC and had to solve a missing-surfer mystery. Ah, pre-teen escapism at its finest (this was a pre-Harry Potter world, people).
