Has there been a big babysitter's club resurgence, lately? Where *Dawn* gets hate? Wasn't she the fun California girl who's dad married Mary Anne's mom? I'm not sure why people would hate her, other than she was popular and from California. And if you leave out the California part, wasn't Stacy just as popular?

But it's been like 20 years since I read any BSC. I mainly just remember that: 1. I hated bossypants Kristen, 2. Claudia had a ton of junkfood hidden throughout her room. 3. One of them was diabetic and always had carrot sticks instead, except for that one time she went off the rails on an M&M binge. 3. There was a super-cool secret passage out of somebody's house (Dawn and Mary Ann, post parent-marriage?).

And sometimes they dated boys, and at one point Jessie learned sign language to better baby sit a deaf girl. And there was a celebrity boy who was not a baby sitter. I remember far too much of this nonsense.

It's weird the stuff you remember from things you read decades ago, isn't it? I remember reading the book where Kristy's family dog died and they sang "Brother Louie" at the funeral... which I always thought was "Louie, Louie" as a kid. I was really confused when I realized that it was a totally different song than the one I thought.

Holy shit, Baby-sitters Club! And huh, people hate Dawn? She wasn't my favorite character, but I never disliked her. And she gets automatic cool points for living in a house with a secret passage. I wanted to live in a house with a secret passage so badly when I was a kid.

I only read the Little Sister books in, like, second grade. I always skipped chapter two because it was always the same spiel about how she had two of everything because her parents were divorced.

Off topic somewhat, but whatever.

I didn't even knew this had a fandom.

I'm pretty sure people hate Dawn because for a fun-loving California Girl, she could be pretty witchy and hypocritical. But lbr all of the girls' personality traits became hugely exaggerated as the series went on.

P.S. in case you didn't know, Jessi's black!!!!!!!!!

Baby-sitter's Club secret! Wow, I used to love these. I wonder if they still hold up...

Anyway, people hate Dawn? That seems weird to me. I couldn't imagine hating any of them; they all seemed pretty cool to me.

I had no idea these books had a fandom or that it was big enough to have a largely-hated character. ._.

Anyway I remember I used to be kind of annoyed at how all of Dawn's traits were attributed to her being from California. I remember there was one part in the book where she said she was going back to her hometown "where everyone was blond" and thinking "But people in Southern California mostly have brown or black hair because of all the immigration from Mexico!" and thinking the author had never been to California in her life.

...Dawn was my favourite, I think. I don't know. It's been ages since I read the books. I know I liked Claudia too. I don't think I read any of the spin-offs.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The resurgence is because there is going to be a re-printing of the books.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike her, but I was often annoyed because everything she said about California (specifically Anaheim) was wrong.

And it always cracked me up how she was afraid of gangs when she went to New York when she was from Anaheim. Because, well. Gangs.

This is a bit off-topic but...

When I was little I was reading these as they came out (in the UK) and one day I was in this odd little independant bookshop and came across a US version of one of the books that we hadn't got to yet. I was ridiculously excited - turned out it had a printing error, a bunch of pages were in the wrong order, so I suppose it'd got sold off cheap somehow.

Anyway, It was the wrong color and the logo was wrong and it was even the wrong size; is was a crazy alien artifact to my little brain and it was practically FROM THE FUTURE OMG! *cough*

When the UK edition came out I bought it (gotta have a matching set, obvs) and was totally amazed to discover that it had been Brit-picked. I went through both books and underlined all the changes (Milk Duds = Malteasers, is the ony one I remember still - which I have only lately discovered is completely false) and basically it was my first experience of the 'divided by a common language thing'.

/cool story sis

Dawn was always my favorite. I think my reason for this was because one of my aunt's is named Dawn, and I started reading the books right when she and my uncle took my family camping at her cabin. Projection much?

Even when I was young, I was made uncomfortable by the sexual tension inherent in that cover illustration. :\ And yes, I know who they both are.

BABY-SITTERS' CLUB FANDOM. When I was 8-11 I would have been all over that. My brother and I basically wrote fanfic for them anyway. (That's right, my older brother. We shared Transformers, X-Men, Final Fantasy, and BSC. Fuck no, gender stereotypes!)

(Kristy was his favorite, Mary Ann was mine)

I remember the Dawn book (I think it was one of the specials) in which the school is putting on a production of Peter Pan and Dawn gets chosen to be Wendy and then deems that the entire thing is sexist and tries to change her lines from stuff like: "yes, I'll cook and clean for you" into "yes, I'll TEACH YOU how to cook and clean for yourself."

I remember laughing my head off at the long-suffering male teacher who just wanted to put on the damn play.

So maybe that has something to do with the Dawn hate, but honestly it just made her one of my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Time to indulge in some BSC nostalgia!

So does anyone remember one of those "Specials" books where there's a giant snowstorm, and I believe it's Mallory and Mary Anne who are stuck in Mallory's house with all of her siblings while her parents are out of town? Because that would totally happen to an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old. I really liked that book because it reminded me of the stories my parents would tell about the Blizzard of '82 (in St. Louis, MO, that is).

Oh, and on the back cover of a Stacy-centric book, they spelled her name as "Stacey" and then switched back to "Stacy." I remember showing my mother and she said something about "lazy editors." I guess she was right, since the nine-year-olds were catching their mistakes.
