[Baby-sitters Club]

But it's been like 20 years since I read any BSC. I mainly just remember that: 1. I hated bossypants Kristen, 2. Claudia had a ton of junkfood hidden throughout her room. 3. One of them was diabetic and always had carrot sticks instead, except for that one time she went off the rails on an M&M binge. 3. There was a super-cool secret passage out of somebody's house (Dawn and Mary Ann, post parent-marriage?).
And sometimes they dated boys, and at one point Jessie learned sign language to better baby sit a deaf girl. And there was a celebrity boy who was not a baby sitter. I remember far too much of this nonsense.

Off topic somewhat, but whatever.
I didn't even knew this had a fandom.

Baby-sitter's Club secret! Wow, I used to love these. I wonder if they still hold up...
Anyway, people hate Dawn? That seems weird to me. I couldn't imagine hating any of them; they all seemed pretty cool to me.

Anyway I remember I used to be kind of annoyed at how all of Dawn's traits were attributed to her being from California. I remember there was one part in the book where she said she was going back to her hometown "where everyone was blond" and thinking "But people in Southern California mostly have brown or black hair because of all the immigration from Mexico!" and thinking the author had never been to California in her life.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:35 am (UTC)(link)And it always cracked me up how she was afraid of gangs when she went to New York when she was from Anaheim. Because, well. Gangs.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)When I was little I was reading these as they came out (in the UK) and one day I was in this odd little independant bookshop and came across a US version of one of the books that we hadn't got to yet. I was ridiculously excited - turned out it had a printing error, a bunch of pages were in the wrong order, so I suppose it'd got sold off cheap somehow.
Anyway, It was the wrong color and the logo was wrong and it was even the wrong size; is was a crazy alien artifact to my little brain and it was practically FROM THE FUTURE OMG! *cough*
When the UK edition came out I bought it (gotta have a matching set, obvs) and was totally amazed to discover that it had been Brit-picked. I went through both books and underlined all the changes (Milk Duds = Malteasers, is the ony one I remember still - which I have only lately discovered is completely false) and basically it was my first experience of the 'divided by a common language thing'.
/cool story sis

BABY-SITTERS' CLUB FANDOM. When I was 8-11 I would have been all over that. My brother and I basically wrote fanfic for them anyway. (That's right, my older brother. We shared Transformers, X-Men, Final Fantasy, and BSC. Fuck no, gender stereotypes!)
(Kristy was his favorite, Mary Ann was mine)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)I remember laughing my head off at the long-suffering male teacher who just wanted to put on the damn play.
So maybe that has something to do with the Dawn hate, but honestly it just made her one of my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 03:38 am (UTC)(link)So does anyone remember one of those "Specials" books where there's a giant snowstorm, and I believe it's Mallory and Mary Anne who are stuck in Mallory's house with all of her siblings while her parents are out of town? Because that would totally happen to an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old. I really liked that book because it reminded me of the stories my parents would tell about the Blizzard of '82 (in St. Louis, MO, that is).
Oh, and on the back cover of a Stacy-centric book, they spelled her name as "Stacey" and then switched back to "Stacy." I remember showing my mother and she said something about "lazy editors." I guess she was right, since the nine-year-olds were catching their mistakes.
