I had that happen with Bunnicula by James and Deborah Howe - got the US version from the library, and it was full of evocative and mysterious American candy names like sour balls (I don't think they even registered for me as a normally edible foodstuff; I think I thought of them as some sort of tennis balls IDEK WTF 8-YEAR-OLD ME), and unfamiliar TV shows. That was part of its charm!

Then I bought my own UK copy and was AFFRONTED to discover that they'd Britiffied it.
