I only read the Little Sister books in, like, second grade. I always skipped chapter two because it was always the same spiel about how she had two of everything because her parents were divorced.

Off topic somewhat, but whatever.

I didn't even knew this had a fandom.

is that about Karen? I remembered those because the kids in her class got 'married' to each other and exhanged rings and stuff. The Ann M Martin writers had pretty weird misconceptions about childhood and tween years

... Yeah it was about Karen, but I don't remember the kids getting married. Tbh, "getting married" sounds like something I would've done as a kid.

I always thought it was weird that Karen had two pairs of glasses that she wore interchangeably. Though, her parents seemed well-off so I guess they could've afforded them. I read the books but I don't remember relating to Karen at all.

Karen and Ricky got married, I don't remember anything more than that. (I'm *CERTAIN* I have all my Little Sister books stored away somewhere, I could probably look it up...)

And Karen's blue glasses were for reading and her pink glasses were for everything else. I guess this was a time before kids bifocals?

WHY DO I REMEMBER THIS.

Wasn't it one of Karen's friends who got married and Karen was supposed to be a bridesmaid, but then she got a bad hair cut so her friend kicked her out of the wedding?

I can't believe I remember that either. But yeah.

You know? I think I remember that...

Just because that sounds like something that would've happened to me.

God, I'm more like Karen than I thought.

I wouldn't use pretending to get married as an example, but yeah the writers definitely did have some weird ideas about child development. Like they thought everyone from age 2-12 acted exactly the same and then as soon as they hit they entered middle school, BAM, maturity. I remember there was a part where they were baby-sitting a bunch of kids at once and they had all the kids, including Mallory since she wasn't a member of the club yet, sit and listen to Thomas the Tank Engine. I remember thinking, "What eleven-year-old would sit down and listen to a thirteen-year-old read picture books??"

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I totally acted the same from about 6-12, and then BAM maturity.

But hell if I was going to listen to a Thomas the Tank Engine thing at 11.

Oh my goddess, Karen!

I remember being really happy that there was finally somebody who didn't like to use contractions of words like I did. (Obviously, I grew out of it.)

I really hope this doesn't have a fandom, though. I think the only reason I was in to it back in elementary school was because nobody could point out little things that I missed and make me feel bad.

Lmao. I can't recall any terrible things she did, but she was a bit of a pill if I remember correctly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they hate her. She was Ann M. Martin's self-professed favorite/ author darling.

But they rightly need to! God, that child was annoying!

I didn't read those, but my daughter did when she was that age.

I read BSC as a kid but I remember nothing about the books; they just didn't grab me enough at the time I guess. Several people on my flist are into the fandom and write for it, and I always feels bad that I don't remember enough about the series to really comment on their fic (and have zero interest in re-reading it).

I don't remember the canon very well, but I have enjoyed reading some of the fic.

*nods*

This is the only one I've got in my recs:

I'm pretty sure wisdomeagle has written BSC as well; she usually requests it for Yuletide.

I loved the Little Sister books but it frustrated me to no end that Karen didn't know how to use contractions. I guess this was to teach kids how to speak properly? But no it's actually stupid.

Anyway the fandom is pretty much all femslash as far as I know.

I always skipped chapter two because it was always the same spiel about how she had two of everything because her parents were divorced.

Everyone learned to do that with the BSC books, too. I think I read one or two of the Little Sister books and then two books from that series's spin-off, The Kids in Ms. Coleman's Class, about Karen's classmates. Yes, that happened. The craze was that insane.

You should've been around eight years ago. LOTS of BSC stuff going on on LJ. RPG and everything. Good times.
