Can you give us more examples of what you're complaining about? Sure, Azula was a villain, but her two sidekicks were on the side of good and Katara, Suki, and Toph were all pretty "fiery" in their own rights, even if it wasn't their element of choice.

Mai and Ty Lee didn't have fire powers, so I don't think they count.

This is a good point. If Katara had been fire-elemental, OP would be pointing to her as an example of this secret, but the sad truth is that female characters in GENERAL are often portrayed as shrill, emotional, strident, party-pooping "straight men" to the guys who just wanna have fun; OR the sexy fiery villanness; OR the vulnerable, helpless damsel in distress. It really has little to do with magical elementals and a lot to do with most media still not having a clue how to write female characters.

ATLA is FAR better about this than most, but man, Katara for a while there...

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding this as well- fire elementals almost always have control issues in the beginning and need to learn to reign in their tempers, regardless of gender.
