This is a good point. If Katara had been fire-elemental, OP would be pointing to her as an example of this secret, but the sad truth is that female characters in GENERAL are often portrayed as shrill, emotional, strident, party-pooping "straight men" to the guys who just wanna have fun; OR the sexy fiery villanness; OR the vulnerable, helpless damsel in distress. It really has little to do with magical elementals and a lot to do with most media still not having a clue how to write female characters.

ATLA is FAR better about this than most, but man, Katara for a while there...
