Stress question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This past month I've been having pretty severe pain in my neck- right now I can't turn left or straighten it, I've been walking with my head at an angle all day. I'm 19, probably too young for actual joint problems.
Since there is no clear cause, is it possible that it is due to stress? I have been pretty stressed- severe untreated depression, anxiety, etc. I've been feeling faint but that's probably more because I haven't been eating.

It could be stress, but it could also be a bad sleeping position or a bad posture. I have a friend who had debilitating headaches and neck pains because she was always in a bad posture and it screwed with her muscles and her nerves. Your best bet, if you can, is to check with a doctor and/or a kinesiotherapist.

19 is not necessarily too young for joint problems - I have a friend who developed arthritis at about that age. See a doctor if it persists.

One thing that might help is your posture. Try to stand up straight and if you sit down a lot during the day, sit completely in the chair with your back against the backrest, like all the way in the chair as opposed to on the edge. I didn't even notice I was doing that at work until someone pointed it out and it caused me to hunch over at my desk which put a lot of strain on my neck/back. Ergonomics and posture help a lot.

Stress can cause pain in the neck/upper back but those are some small things you can do to help. It also helps to practice basic breathing exercises if you find yourself stressed a lot of the time, just take slow breaths -- inhale and hold it in, focus on the air in your lungs, exhale, it helps

Yeah, it's probably stress. Or you might have slept on it funny, or both. I'd recommend seeing a chiropractor if you can.
