Re: queer fiction by non-queer writers

I think that for the most part it is fine, but sometimes it seems like queer people aren't telling their own stories.
For example, the straight guy who pretended to be gay for a year then came out as straight again and got a book deal. That's not cool- he is telling the story of his sanitized 'coming out' where he risked nothing (He told close family members and friends that he really was straight) but sold a story that most if not all queer people could have told without having to deal with more than a year's homophobia.

Forgot the link!
My mistake, he only told an aunt and two friends.

That's really annoying.

I can see why someone would be upset, but this guy was pretty respectful. In the article he specifically defers his experience.

He didn't write a book for the queer crowd. he wrote it for straight people trying to understand the queer crowd. A gay man writing a book about his experiences aren't going to encourage the type of people who don't want to think about gays, or would not like reading about them, will not pick up their book. But they might pick up this.

The people he's writing to see something fundamentally wrong with being gay, and if a gay man is saying his experiences have been rough, they'll not care or say it was coming to him. They might say the same thing here, but with this guy, they might not be saying there was something "wrong" with him.

That got to me too. It's pretty much another one in a long long line of narratives with the theme "Nothing matters unless it happens to a straight white guy."

I'm gay and, honestly, I just can't bring myself to hate on him as much as other people do. I guess I just kinda...I mean he tried ya know?

NAYRT - I didn't hate him as much as other people seemed to and I was mostly okay with the whole "experiment" thing since he was trying, but it did really bug me that he was writing a book and trying to make a buck off of it.

It's pretty frustrating to see that happen... especially to go into the comments and see gay people trying to defend him. Allies that want to make a minority issue about themselves don't have any difficult finding an audience, it seems.

Someone on those comments mentioned that Hollywood should make a movie based on his story, how sad it is that I can totally see that happening instead of a history about an actual queer person facing homophobia in their entire lives?

In fairness, they actually did something similar [to making a movie about an actual queer dealing with homophobia] when they made Milk?

But yeah. I agree.

I really need to watch it... :[

I think the movie is actually a good example of what I'm talking about too- correct me if I'm wrong, but Harvey Milk was one of the first out politicians of his time, yes?

It seems like gay people don't get that much attention unless they have a extra-ordinary experience to tell, whereas a straight person in a queer context is a extra-ordinary thing by default, and the guy the anonymous linked to took advantage of that and got a book deal. Some time ago Adam Sandler did a similar thing by making that movie where two heterosexual guys get married. Both of those guys might be allies(or not), but it's hard to see their intentions as sincere when you take all of that into consideration.
