I think in the OP's case, it's more than them just not being fannish. I would have a real problem with someone telling me that something I liked was a waste of time, whether they "got" it or not. I have loved ones who enjoy things I think are stupid, but I don't tell them that.

I suppose I elide the two because fannishness so often meets with kneejerk derision from those who don't get it.

Exactly. I don't mind my parents not being interested in my fandoms, but constantly telling me that TV shows and movies are all stupid and that it's ridiculous to be so invested in them (even though they haven't actually WATCHED any of those shows and movies and don't know if they're any good) is just hurtful. It's just a dickish thing to do to tell your loved ones that you think one of their major hobbies is the stupidest thing ever.

Yea, telling someone that what you like is 'stupid' is rude and shouldn't be done, but if it's just the once I'd probably overlook it and move on.

Multiple times or on a regular basis though? That's fucking annoying.

I once had a friend that couldn't understand my love for LOTR and was always telling me how silly/weird/dorky my interest in it was, to the point where I stopped mentioning it altogether. It's not like I spent much time talking about it with them anyway, so I'm not sure why they had that reaction to it. Then even when I wouldn't mention it, they would bring it up just to tell me how much they didn't care for it, and it was a mess.

That shit isn't cute.

Yeah this. I'm in the same boat as the OP and it sucks trying to explain to my parents that fandom is important to me when they refuse to get it whatsoever. :/
