CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ALERT! I'm going to come off as a total bitch in the eyes of a bunch of people who own those toys, I'm sure, but anytime I see someone spending exorbitant amounts of money on clothes for their doll, I cringe a little. Seriously? When real kids are starving on the streets? You know how many shirts for REAL PEOPLE you could buy for that much?

But then, I think that about lots of people with super-expensive hobbies. If I had that kind of money to blow, I'd try to give something back, not buy hundred-dollar designer pants for an overpriced Japanese Barbie.

</obnoxious hobo ranting>

I don't have any of those dolls, nor do I want one. But I do have other expensive hobbies. I really think the whole 'when real kids are starving on the street' thing is a bit silly. You may not like the dolls. You may find them creepy. But don't tell me you give all your spare money to starving children or to paying off your student loans.

Honestly, right now my money's going towards food and utilities and that's about it. I haven't even taken out student loans because I don't know how I'll pay them off. Aaaand yeah, I know that "...when kids are starving on the street" is a silly, impractical thing to say that sounds like the dinner table rantings of a suburban housewife!

And before you say it's because I think they're creepy, it's not. I think the dolls are pretty. I can see the appeal, like I can see the appeal of owning three yachts or a sapphire-encrusted fondue pot or a rare pair of vintage tube socks autographed by William Shatner. But honestly? It doesn't matter to me if it's these dolls, or rich white dudes getting a third house that they only live in over Labor Day weekend, or celebrities buying thousand-dollar diamond-encrusted collars for their cats. Sure, it's their right to put their money towards whatever silly thing they want. They earned it, it's their right to use it for what makes them happy. But it's my right to think it's a pointless waste of funds that could be put towards something, anything more useful.

But then, I'm just a dirty hippie like that.

"...or a rare pair of vintage tube socks autographed by William Shatner."

Awesome, now I know what to get you for your birthday.

I agree that if you're having trouble paying ordinary bills you shouldn't buy a hugely expensive doll. But if that's not the case... I don't see why one hobby is worse than another just because this one is dolls. Which is something I've seen said, not you saying it. And it doesn't quite equate with a yacht.
I have to admit that one reason why I get defensive about it is because I have a hobby that adds up, moneywise. People think I'm crazy for it. But I love it a lot. It doesn't *feel* like an 'extravagance' to me. It seems like 'a hobby that I love, and save up for'. ya know? But, if I were having trouble paying the bills, I'd be not spending my money on it. Luckily a lot of my hobby doesn't *have* to be hugely expensive.
Basically I just don't think it's anyone's business what hobby people spend their money on... as long as they're not saving up all their money for a doll or doll's clothes (or other hobbies) when they can't pay for their food or electricity etc. You don't have to be a multimillionaire to be able to have expensive 'trivial' hobbies.
Just my opinion.

And if you're loving whatever your hobby is and saving up for it, and it makes you happy, and you're not going broke over it, awesome. I'm happy when other people are happy! And everyone needs something to occupy their time and creative energy.

Personally, I'm realizing how much money I've blown on cosplay and cons in the past and going "Wow! I wish I had that for school now!" Not that I didn't enjoy it at the time, but damn if it doesn't sting a little when I look back.

I cry over wasted cosplay money. XD; (Not really, but I totally could if I thought about it too long. x_x)

Anyway, it's a hard argument. I'm all for hobbies, but at the same time, you're right and the money could go to better use. But hey, WE'RE ONLY HUMAN YES? Personally I think ball-joint dolls are on the higher end of a LOW scale. $1,000 isn't depriving a starving country from salvation. Celebrity yachts and such... that's a little different. Of course I'm not trying to say "Well the REALLY EXPENSIVE STUFF just ISN'T okay!" because you know, EVERYONE has their right to spend THEIR money. I just think critisizing Dollfie collectors might be a bit much. Getting down to it in light of fighting for 'productivity' and 'usefullness', people would do better to go yell at Celebrities or Bill Gates or something. XD They can be just as extravegant and probably even MORE snobbish- depending on which you catch. XD

I'm not critisizing you, btw. Just trying to say... It's a difficult subject to fight. :/

So what's this expensive hobby of yours? You beat around that bush real good.

Re: 5

Dollhouse miniatures. Making a 1:12 scale interior of houses/rooms, including the people. Mine are set in various historical times. I make a lot of it myself, rather than buying, but (one of my) my dollhouse cost $700 just for the basic shell. I got it as a 17th birthday present. (designed it myself. It's fecking huge though, hence the expense), and I still have to work on wallpapering, painting, windows, doors, flooring, etc. I've got most of the furniture and accessories already for it though, so it's just sitting in there without wallpaper so far. Mum's in the hobby too. And it's a way to socialise with people, you can use any craft for it, just tiny obviously, and it's also highly imaginative. Most of the people who do it though are retired, so I'm just a freak. :P It's not like I go and spend hundreds of dollars on it each month, but about once a year at the fairs, we lash out and buy... quite a lot of stuff. Or supplies to MAKE our own stuff.

also... I didn't think it was relevant what hobby it was. My dad and brother used to be hugely into model trains. A friend of mine is obsessed with knitting. Another buys hundreds of dvds. Another has a very expensive social life. Another goes to plays and concerts a lot. Unless people want everyone to never spend money except when absolutely necessary, everyone spends money that could go to starving children. No reason to pick on hobbies for it. Especially not one certain hobby.

I was just curious. And I'm not picking on hobbies, cause I have hobbies too that I spend way too much money on myself (books mainly), but I do it within the constraints of my budget. I'm talking about the people who have hobbies they spend money they don't have on, and then turn around and beg other people for money because they realize too late that they don't have enough to pay their bills that month.
