Spider-Man's been a douchebag since he sold his soul to Mephisto. When the Chameleon pretended to be him and have sex with his roommate, Peter was only upset because said roommate started to treat him like her boyfriend and he wasn't interested in her.

Plus Doc Ock hasn't had sex with MJ and we don't even know if he will.

But wow that incarnation of Peter sounds terrible (though, selling his soul probably explains a good chunk of his bad behavior).

Better? Probably not. His moral code is too warped for that, and not in a Wolverine anti-hero way.

But could this have been a better story? YES. I've always loved how Doc Ock seems to be the perfect mirror to Peter, (It's always struck me as a little odd why Norman is always Peter's ultimate arch foe- the guy is great but I feel there's a lot more that could be done with the similarities between Octavius and Peter) but this doesn't work. No one cares that 'Peter' is suddenly acting differently, no one. Octavius may have all his memories, but when it's canon that a Peter imposter has been weeded out due to a single oatmeal cookie (the real Peter hates them) why has no one noticed? Or been the least suspicious. Everyone in Peter's life seems to have taken up the idiot ball. It's ridiculous.

Also the whole Mary Jane thing, brrrr. If they attempt any sort of redemption storyline it'll only be overshadowed by the fact that Doc Ock is now a rapist.

A storyline about a villain taking over a heroes body and learning to like it, perhaps realising that redemption can be reached and changing for the better: that could have been great, given Doc Ock's backstory and similarity to Peter. Maybe then he could have had a chance at being 'better' than Peter. But at the moment it's a mess.

How can Doc Ock be a rapist when he hasn't even fucked her yet?

Sorry, poor wording on my part. My reply was a little rushed, what I meant to say was something along the lines of 'Doc Ock is now okay with being a rapist'; he seemed to be on the verge of raping MJ in #700 and probably would have if they weren't interrupted. He's not an actual rapist yet, but now he's been established as someone with the same mindset as a rapist: he doesn't see Mary Jane as a human being, just an object for his pleasure and has no qualms about raping her. It's incredibly difficult to evoke any sort of sympathy for a character like that, especially if he does go through with the act.

Maybe but I don't think Slott would go down that route if, as he says, he's trying to make Ock a more sympathetic character. I wouldn't be surprised if Ock ends up not being able to go through with it and breaking off the relationship.

Attempted rapists and rapists are equally reprehensible people. You aren't a better person because you were unsuccessful.

But he hasn't even tried to rape her. People are making assumptions that he's *going* to.

I think this is the reasoning:

A is posing as B.

C thinks A is B.

A attempts to initiate sex with C in such a manner as one initiates consensual sex. However, because C thinks A is B and A knows C thinks A is be, any such sex would be rape; therefore, attempting to initiate sex is attempted rape.
