Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

"stereotypes are there for a reason"

and this absolves media of always sticking to the stereotypes

why, the black character is from the hood yet again?

but, stereotypes are there for a reason!

Wow, someone is speaking in generalities about breeds of dogs and you straight-up accused them of racism.

FANDOM SECRETS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
lol no. that was an example to say that the dumb statement "stereotypes are there for a reason" means nothing and isnt an argument against what OP said. OP is tired of seeing every husky portrayed the same stereotypical way, and someone replies with well, reasons, as if huskies couldn't be portrayed some other way

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Stereotypes are shitty because they don't take differences into account, but they do actually exist for a reason and generally have at least some basis in reality. A basis that is often highly, highly skewed and often taken out of context, but still.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree. but the statement "stereotypes are there for a reason" shouldnt be used as an excuse or justification when someone is tired of media always following a stereotype

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It also shouldn't be used as an excuse to get on our OMGRACISTBASTARDS!!SJW soapbox when it's being used in a context obviously talking about animals, holy shit. There's a time and place for these battles. A thread about puppies is not it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
lol i wasnt calling the anon racist calm yourself othernonnie

i was making an example of how "stereotypes have reasons" is generally a shitty argument

Actually, when it comes to dog breeds, you can stereotype a lot because a lot of behavior really is bred into them.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading is hard, isn't it? They said THE stereotype is there for a reason. Not that ALL stereotypes are good. But thanks for getting butthurt so soon into the post!

They didn't write it very well, I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out. (I don't really think comparing it to racism is a good idea, but I did read "stereotypes [are] there for a reason" when I first read that comment which is generally not a great thing to say)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"this stereotype is there for a reason" is the same thing as saying "stereotypes are there for a reason" because the fuck, what stereotype doesnt have reasons behind it, there are always reasons

its a shitty thing to use as a defense or justification of media portrayals no matter what they are

I don't know why you're telling me this. I don't disagree at all

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
way to miss the point

in this case the reason is because dogs like these are working breeds and tend to be unruly- if they were portrayed as inherently incapable of good behaviour, I'd agree that's unfair, just like if someone black was automatically portrayed as from the hood because WELL THAT'S THE DEFAULT- that's not right.

however just as there are black people from the hood there are also plenty of working dogs who unfortunately are adopted or cared for by people who don't really understand what it means to take care of a high energy breed and blame the problem that results on the breed because they're just bad!! look at their faces! rather than thinking about what motivated the dog to act out in such a way

let me put it this way- if a tv show made something about the lives of black people from the hood and actually went into depth and detail about what that actually meant and explored the stereotype- why did it come to be? who popularized it? how does the knowledge of that stereotype affect the people who actually LIVE in that kind of situation?

I think stereotypes are great provided you're willing to think about them and their implications and actually DO something with them instead of use them as stock cutouts, frankly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
that has what to do with the secret

OP is tired of huskies always being a stereotype. you say the stereotype is there for reasons as if that makes it all okay or will change OP's mind?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
'it's not this little guy's fault he was born with that face'

point being, it's not his face but his behaviour that is making people portray him in such a manner

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
errrrr except it is according to the OP, the bandit face one is the villain while other huskies arent?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you mean like that new reality show coming out "All my baby's mommas", and how people are decrying it as racist and trying to get it off the air?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
This doesn't really change anything.

tend to be unruly- if they were portrayed as inherently incapable of good behaviour

Except isn't that kind of what "wicked" means? And using "unruly" in the same context implies that it's the "I want to cause trouble!!" kind of unruly rather than the "I'm bored as fuck and I don't know what to do because I'm a dog so I'll break things" kind of unruly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Depends, really. I've seen wicked being used to describe the *actions* instead of the reasons behind them [For example: Breaking things is being called wicked, not the 'I'm bored and don't know what to do'] as often, if not more so, than it being used to actually call someone *evil*, or incapable of good.
