I'd say it's more like 95 % of all shippers. It's like the majority of the fandom hasn't even watched the show or has decided to ignore just about everything in it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. I was aware of TW and Sterek through places like this, but I'd never seen it until recently because I figured I wouldn't like it. Turns out, I actually quite like the show, I just DO NOT GET where fandom is getting all their interpretations from. Do not get it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Go to the dark side, anon. People who have actually paid attention to the show and characters are out there on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to find them, but how would I even do that on Tumblr?! That's where all the other fans live too, how would I ferret out the ones who watched the same show I did? I don't even ship Sterek. There is no place for me in TW fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, I don't even use tumblr. But I do use Gooogle Reader.
Here's a (non-exhaustive) list of tumblr users who are awesome:

tofixtheshadows
aggressivefrowning
mccallssunnyd <--- the actual best
negress-of-doom
girlswhoturnintowolves
mexicanprincessbrienne
shorm
meandrous
palaceofposey
heathicorn

And a few more. You'll pick them up as things are discussed and reblogged.
Also the show has its own tumblr at teenwolf.

Enjoy the fandom, anon!

DA - Just a word of warning, those are probably not the blogs to follow if you're a big fan of Stiles or Sterek. Most of them are good about giving warnings in their sidebars that say as much, though. And they all tend to be pretty pro-Scott, so they're good to follow if you're a Scott fan. :)

[personal profile] pynapel 2013-01-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's a great list.
Just keep in mind that mccallssunnyd is on indefinite hiatus, so she won't be around.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm going to go check those out!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
So from what I've seen these are just butthurt Scott fans and Scott/Allison or Scott/Derek shippers who are mad that Stiles/Derek is the most popular ship in fandom and that fandom doesn't like Scott?

As someone who ships unpopular stuff in 90% of her fandoms ... boo-fucking-hoo, get over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's more like people who are upset at the overwhelming majority of fandom completely ignoring the POC main character in favor of a pair of white dudes, especially given that a significant proportion of the Sterek shippers claim that they're campaigning for their ship for queer representation...while they also ignore or use the canon queer POC. Yeah.

It's extremely common to have new viewers of the show say, "Wait, who is Scott McCall? I thought Stiles was the main character of the show." simply because most fans ignore or hate Scott for a multitude of "reasons," frequently dipping into very problematic rhetoric when they try to justify their dislike of him. Commonly, Scott "is such a potato." As in, so stupid he's mentally handicapped. Ableism is not a good look.

As to Allison, the fandom trended #killAllison on Twitter, plus tons of other shit about hating on/ignoring female characters.

This isn't a thing about butthurt shipping. This is a thing about how a fandom can, by and large, romanticize a relationship between two white dudes that is, in canon, based almost entirely in distrust and violence, granting these characters all sorts of passes on characterization and actions while the main character is frequently villainized, and everyone else (POCs and female characters) are sidelined. It's basically an exercise in white male glorification.

especially given that a significant proportion of the Sterek shippers claim that they're campaigning for their ship for queer representation...while they also ignore or use the canon queer POC.

Oh come on. I could see this if Danny was a main character but so far, he's Jackson's Best Friend and that's all. Hopefully the show does more with him in season three and we'll have a queer main character but until then, are you really telling me there's no different between Danny and between Derek and Stiles? I think POC representation in media is important too but this is a pretty weak argument. Fandom's not ignoring Danny any more than the canon is.

But I have to agree with Scott. I really hate what fandom is doing with him. :\

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The distinction is that there are people who ship Sterek while proclaiming that they are championing queer representation. If they wanted to do that, shouldn't they be campaigning for more screentime for Danny?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Danny's actor is ... not all that good and he looks even less like a teenager than the others, so I'm not hoping for more screentime for him.

Until recently I had no idea that Scott was even a POC because you've got to admit that he's definitely white-passing (look-wise; the show never mentions that he isn't white, and 'Scott McCall' isn't exactly a name that makes you assume he's POC either). How exactly am I being racist towards a guy I thought for a long time was white? I just find Stiles the more interesting character. I can't speak for other fans because I'm not in the fandom, but that's it for me personally.

And I'd love for Danny to get more screentime and a canon love interest or a relationship with one of the other already existing characters, but I fail to see how that means that I can't also ship another slash ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
OK, yes. This is what gets me about the whole "racism" thing about Scott. Honestly, I'd bet that 90% of Teen Wolf fandom had no idea Scott was supposed to be a POC until fairly recently (and by that I mean within the last six months). In fact, I used to see a lot of stuff complaining about the "all-white cast". And ok, maybe that's problematic in a different way, but you can't have it both ways, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. I do think there are serious disparities between the fan version of the show and the actual version of the show (I was legit shocked at the, to me, almost complete lack of any canon evidence for Stiles/Derek). And yes, it is bizarre that a show with a canon gay character (underdeveloped as he is) very rarely talks about him/ships him, yet is "very concerned" about queer representation. (Then again, having main characters in a homosexual relationship where the fact that it is homosexual is not a big deal would be huge-- way more important for representation than a single side character with little screen time. So I get what they're saying there.)

But, first of all, I'd venture a guess that lots of people don't even know Scott is POC-- and even if they do, I kind of find it hard to believe that's actually a factor in why they talk about/ship other people instead of him. Personally, I do find Stiles and Derek more interesting as characters (though I don't think their relationship is a romantic one *at all* in canon) than Scott. I think Scott can be kind of annoying, if endearing, and sometimes boring. I would guess that's why Stiles/Derek get more "screen time" in fandom.
As for the potato thing, I have *never* heard that reasoning for it. If people were really making some giant leaps and trying to imply that he had a cognitive disability and that made him a shitty character, then yeah, that would be ableist and shitty. But, first of all, saying someone is not smart is not inherently ableist (and, let's be honest, Scott makes unbelievably stupid decisions sometimes). Either way though, I have always heard the "potato" thing as being related to his appearance. Which, granted, is still pretty cruel and gross, but is not ableist in the slightest, only shallow.

I could be wrong about both things, in which case I apologize and will now believe that the TW fandom is far, far shittier than I ever imagined. But I kind of feel like you're attributing some horrible intentions/isms where there aren't any.

Annnnd eating my words.

SA

Mere moments later, having just explored some of the tags on tumblr with open mouthed disgust, I humbly withdraw all words in defense of the apparently spectacularly gross TW fandom.

I've only ever read fic on Ao3, and only exploring very particular tags, so I never got any sort of overview of how people were talking about the show outside of that very small world. I apologize for speaking without doing my research because wow. Welp, glad I've had my daily dose of "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things-- BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE TERRIBLE."

Easiest way to find the dark side? Follow this tag:

you'll find 'em in no time.

Haha, thanks, that looks hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ohgod thanks for that link. I don't know shit about this fandom, but this tag is so full of bitter assholes, it's hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Any time I get to the point where I feel like I'm taking fandom too seriously, I check that tag and instantly feel better about myself.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stop laughing about these people. This is the best thing ever, thank you so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually a different anon from the one who linked it above, but glad you're enjoying it! I always get a good laugh out of it myself. Then again, most parts of the TW fandom give me a good laugh. Lol.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
The show is actually quite good! I can understand why it's not some people's thing and there are definitely some issues and gaping plotholes, but it's got great characters and it's pretty damn entertaining. A lot of the fanon is incredibly questionable, but you get that to some degree with all fandoms. I think with TW it just tends to be worse because a lot of people seem to come to the show via fandom and the fanon has sort of taken on a life of its own and gets spread via the weird echo chamber that is the Tumblr fandom in particular.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing that they've seen a bunch of manipulated gifs on tumblr and decided that they were a good summary of the episodes, and there was no need to actually watch them.
