Food/Nutrition question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
We're a group of pretty smart people here, so I'm just going to toss this question out and see if anything sticks: What makes us feel full? Is it calories, quantity or quality?

I mean, let's say I'm feeling a little peckish, and I have the option of a handful of french fries or an equal number of carrot sticks chopped to the same dimenions as the fries -- the carrots will clearly have fewer calories, but will they leave me feeling as full, more full or less full than the handful of fries? Or do I have to eat enough carrots to equal the calories in the fry option? Does the fact that they are carrots and thereby full of other good things beyond fat and starch make a difference as far as "I was hungry. Now I'm not," goes?

Protein is known to help fullness last longer, but after a lot of experimenting last year I found that personally I mostly need a lot of fibrous veggies to feel full. Eating tons of veggies is generally the best dietary option in every way, anyway. I've heard that all fibrous foods help keep you feeing full, but I'm not a fan of grains personally so I stick to vegetables, and lots of them.

I have little nutritional knowledge, and I love vegetables (seriously all of my favourite foods are vegetables) - but they do not make me feel full at all. I can eat a meal of mostly vegetables and feel kind of full just after eating, but I will be hungry again an hour later.

If I eat meat, though (which I almost never do), I won't be able to eat again for hours.

Calories have little to do with "feeling full." Calories are how we measure the energy contained in food- the energy we use to fuel our metabolic processes.

Quatity and satiation are both more important to "fullness" than caloric content. An interesting article: http://www.eufic.org/article/en/artid/what-makes-us-feel-full/ .

Why are you putting fullness in "quotes?" Are you implying that fullness isn't a real thing or something? I'm confused. :/

I think just because it's a feeling and not a measurable scientific datum.

That too.

I wasn't implying anything of the sort. I was half quoting the article I linked and half intending to put an emphasis on the words since the OP's pertinent question was "What makes us feel full?"

Fullness is a thing. Your stomach gets full and then nerves signal your brain to say "Stop feeling hungry."

The carrots will make you feel less full than the fries. They have fewer calories, and they're also mostly carbohydrates and water, while the fries have fat. Protein takes longer to digest than carbs, and fat takes longer than either, so a bit of oil or butter in a meal can really contribute to feeling full. Fiber can also help you feel full, since it adds a bit of bulk to food.

So raw veggies on their own won't be very filling, and neither will things like candy, because they're mostly carbs. A really filling meal would be like, steak and potatoes, which has protein, fat, and fiber all together.

I don't know if you'd need to eat enough carrots to match the caloric value of the fries in order to feel as full. The water and the fiber in the carrots might fill you up first.

Culture also plays a big role in what's filling or satisfying. Food you're familiar with, in a setting that you associate with food, will give you more of a mental feeling of being full than food you're not sure about or like, eating in the car when you're used to sitting down at a table.

fullness is also a part time and satiety.

while yes fiber is bulk, it's how fast it runs through your GI tract (stomach really because that's where the chemical signal for satiety eventually hits your brain. like, 20 minutes later).

adding fat or protein to the fiber is a better key to feeling fuller longer. and prevents a sugar crash as it slows the quick response of insulin.

anecdote: fat free Greek yogurt doesn't make me feel full NOR satisfied (don't get me started on regular super saccharine American yogurt), but the 2% fat Greek yogurt can get me going for hours. like the old adage that oatmeal sticks to your ribs - lots of fiber but oats are a high fat grain.

in conclusion, when wanting a snack or something, eat protein plus fiber.
