sometimes I get the feeling that most people use words like "ugly" and "hate" a lot more lightly than I do. I takes a lot to make me hate someone or thing they're honestly ugly

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a bit dopey looking, especially when his hair gets long, but yeah. Ugly is not a word I would attach to him in any context.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's rare for me to think someone legitimately ugly. But it's usually unconnected to my liking/disliking them.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same. It took me awhile to figure that out. I used to be kind of shocked and appalled when people would throw around "hate", when to me that is a really strong word.

same here

it seems to me, through years of observation, that people don't even notice the hyperbole they're using with some very loaded words that probably shouldn't be used so lightly, considering how hurtful they can be

"hyperbole"
"shouldn't be used so lightly"

I get the feeling you don't really understand the point of hyperbole.

DA

Not really. Hyperbole does sort of lose its edge if you throw it around every five minutes.

I feel the same way about "hate." When it comes to ugly, well, I don't mind people SAYING ugly but when people throw that word around to justify disliking someone (or even disliking a series, as in "I hate that show the main actor is ugly") that bothers me a lot more than it probably should.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I feel a bit uncomfortable when people are "I HATE X because he's ugly/other people like him and don't mention Y/he's too profilic!"

That's why you hate him? jeeze, what are your feelings for someone who runs over your dog then?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
That probably depends on whether that person is real to them in a way that celebrities aren't.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
da

i get where anon you replied to is coming from; first time i saw someone admit that hating on "ugly" celebrities was really hyperbole and that they would consider a certain actress hot if he met her in real life but still called her ugly and butterface and whatever online? it blew my mind

Same here. There are plenty of people I don't think are very attractive, but I generally reserve "ugly" for, like, horror movie monsters or something.
