I think a lot of people like Roseanne, the show. Certainly, I think most people within fandom who talk about it do so unironically - it's funny, it's got heart, it's got an honest portrayal of a working class family that's smart but real but not overly negative, it's got John Goodman.

I think there is a lot of negativity in the culture at large, not towards the show but towards Roseanne Barr - she's a woman! she's outspoken and kind of out there in some of her personal views! she sang the Star Spangled Banner once and it was really shit! - which you might be picking up. But that's different.

I think the thing to remember about Roseanne Barr that a lot of her haters conveniently miss, is that though the show was under her creative control during the admittedly craptastic last season(s), it was also under her control for the most brilliant parts of the series as well.

Yeah and I should clarify that I think Roseanne Barr is basically funny and fine and very intelligent, and I think she did play an important role in creating the whole of the show. I'm just trying to explain the dislike that OP is noting has to do (unfairly, but still) with her persona in the 90s and not with the show, which people mostly like.

Yeah, but the ending was just heartbreaking.
