Separate the character from the actor, both in terms of love and hate. Otherwise we will all end up a little unhinged.

+1

It's a fandom axiom: an actor!=a character they play

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
that's gonna be tough to do now that the character was written out of the show because the actor was too much of a handful. So OP may have been separating them in their mind, but the actor's behavior took the character away.

I didn't know that. Great, now I'm all worked up myself.

Yeah, I don't do this. The characters an actor chooses to play reflects on them. Of course, if we're talking about a character who's, say, some kind of alien monster out to kill everyone on Earth, that's one thing. That would be a very bad thing to do in real life, but we all understand that and there's no reason to believe that the actor might agree with eating all of humanity. But if the character's a believable asshole, who has really disgusting views or is a major dick or rapes/sexually harasses or is just a gigantic douchebag to everyone around him/her, I'm going to not like that actor for choosing to play that kind of character and I'm going to lose respect for him/her. They're saying that they approve of it on some level. Unless the story is the kind that clearly says "this character is not okay" and the actor plays it understanding that, that's also different.

Or...the actors are trying to earn a living.
