Separate the character from the actor, both in terms of love and hate. Otherwise we will all end up a little unhinged.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

It's a fandom axiom: an actor!=a character they play

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
that's gonna be tough to do now that the character was written out of the show because the actor was too much of a handful. So OP may have been separating them in their mind, but the actor's behavior took the character away.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know that. Great, now I'm all worked up myself.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't do this. The characters an actor chooses to play reflects on them. Of course, if we're talking about a character who's, say, some kind of alien monster out to kill everyone on Earth, that's one thing. That would be a very bad thing to do in real life, but we all understand that and there's no reason to believe that the actor might agree with eating all of humanity. But if the character's a believable asshole, who has really disgusting views or is a major dick or rapes/sexually harasses or is just a gigantic douchebag to everyone around him/her, I'm going to not like that actor for choosing to play that kind of character and I'm going to lose respect for him/her. They're saying that they approve of it on some level. Unless the story is the kind that clearly says "this character is not okay" and the actor plays it understanding that, that's also different.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Or...the actors are trying to earn a living.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
but... isn't Pierce an asshole too? The cast even used to play "Pierce or Chevy?" posting stuff he said on twitter...

What?!? Where?!? : D

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I can believe it

I don't especially love Pierce, but I think it's probably easier to empathize with him since he has a sad backstory and relatable issues and such. OTOH it is unclear why Chevy Chase is such a fucking prick.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I don't really empathize with Pierce too much, even given that. I mean, if he were just a generic "I hate everyone" kind of asshole, I'd find it more understandable. But he's not, he's a bigot who commits sexual harassment.

I think it's awfully unfair to expect a real person to live up to the ideals set in fiction. He's an actor, but that's just his job, not his life. He can't be on stage all the time. He has to come home, relax and just be himself sometimes, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's true, but I'm not sure that applies so much in this case - because it's not "CHEVY CHASE YOU HAVE TO BE PIERCE", it's "Jesus Christ, why does Chevy Chase have to be an asshole all the fucking time?" Because being himself and relaxing, for Chevy Chase, apparently means being incredibly difficult to work with. And I mean, yes, it doesn't matter, obviously, and I have no right to judge him, but I don't think "don't be a massive prick" is "expecting a real person to live up to the ideals set in fiction."

Yeah, also, in this case "the ideals set in fiction" is setting the bar extremely low. It's basically "why can't you be a disgusting pig with a soft spot instead of just a disgusting pig?"

Chevy Chase is WORSE THAN PIERCE?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY SHIT.

HAHAHA mte.

imo Pierce has that bit of lovable idiot going on, like he's honestly not aware that half the things he says and does are offensive and/or hurtful. Chevy Chase does not have that. At all.

Only me cringing about he spelling of Character?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"he spelling"

I'm picturing you staring at your uneditable comment with your head in your hands, and it is making me laugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
people usually read fast enough not to notice one letter missing. It's not like they spelled it "charatier" or something, they just missed a key.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
For me, Pierce passed the point of redemption when he started mocking that probably suicidal rpg kid. Sorry, just no.
(It's entirely possible that just hit a bit close to home.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. ITA. You could ostensibly blame the pill addiction but I somehow doubt Pierce included an apology to Neil in his making amends.

Yeah, I agree, that was when he crossed the moral event horizon to me.
