imo Pierce has that bit of lovable idiot going on, like he's honestly not aware that half the things he says and does are offensive and/or hurtful. Chevy Chase does not have that. At all.

Calling Pierce a "lovable idiot" is like calling it adorable when the dog destroys the house. Just because he technically doesn't know any better doesn't mean it's endearing.

When my dog destroys the house I get angry but then think "d'awww, he's so stupid but I love him." So yeah, bad analogy.
