I think it's awfully unfair to expect a real person to live up to the ideals set in fiction. He's an actor, but that's just his job, not his life. He can't be on stage all the time. He has to come home, relax and just be himself sometimes, too.

Well, that's true, but I'm not sure that applies so much in this case - because it's not "CHEVY CHASE YOU HAVE TO BE PIERCE", it's "Jesus Christ, why does Chevy Chase have to be an asshole all the fucking time?" Because being himself and relaxing, for Chevy Chase, apparently means being incredibly difficult to work with. And I mean, yes, it doesn't matter, obviously, and I have no right to judge him, but I don't think "don't be a massive prick" is "expecting a real person to live up to the ideals set in fiction."

Well, to be honest, most people are assholes in one way or another. We just don't expect them to be otherwise. He's an asshole to work with. I've had bosses who were incredible assholes.

Only difference with Chevy Chase is that he is a ridiculously HUGE asshole. And he aired his grievances and insults towards the show (and how it was so "beneath him") in a fairly bombastic, embarrassingly public way.

The character he plays is an asshole too, so that's not even really the issue. His RL assholishness made him do and say some shockingly unprofessional things, however, and ultimately he lost his job over it. I used to really enjoy the assholishness of the character Pierce myself, but once I heard all the tales about how Chevy Chase himself was such a terror to work with on the set, I couldn't see his character's assholishness as fun and charming any more. I looked at it through the lens of him as a real person, and as a real person I absolutely hate douchbags like him.

It was pretty disheartening to learn about actually. :/

I don't know much about , or the show in question, but I think it's not uncommon. Actors and other celebrities are often very narcissistic and needy, wanting fame to feed that narcissism. Thing is, once they get power and fame, they get worse and the people around them just tell them how wonderful they are, and they have fans which makes it worse.

I think Chevy Chase no doubt got away with it in his film days because he was worth money, and was the star, now he's not so important as a box office draw in terms of people turning on to watch him, so his behaviour led to him being sacked.

One of the worst cases of hidden vileness was Steve McQueen, he was really awful, even to the point of physical and sexual abuse of his wives. Vile on set as well, but such a massive star that he got away with it all and it came out years after his death.

Well, Chevy Chase thought that flinging around the word n****r when he was angry on the set was perfectly acceptable.

But yeah, the media forgive too many shitty-as-fuck people.

Yeah, also, in this case "the ideals set in fiction" is setting the bar extremely low. It's basically "why can't you be a disgusting pig with a soft spot instead of just a disgusting pig?"
