I like you, OP, as a fellow purist who still managed to like the LOTR movies (well, other than parts of ROTK...I'm not allowed to talk about parts of ROTK anymore) and loved The Hobbit movie, even if I did have a moment of inner OMG HE WOULD NEVER rage at Thranduil bowing to the dwarves early on. Then I giggled at him riding away on his elk and being a dick, and all was right with the world once more.

I love the films because they're how I got into the fandom. Since then I read the books and I've become more critical of the films, but it doesn't mean I don't love them.

Anyway it's not like there aren't other big fandoms out there which apparently thrive on criticising their own canon.
