I don't think the events in Doriath entitle Thranduil to hate dwarves. It makes it understandable -- but that was one group of dwarves thousands of years ago. Moving past that and dealing with living dwarves on their own merits might not be easy, but it's part of the responsibility of being a leader.

Someone better acquainted with The Hobbit correct me, but does Thranduil even hate Dwarves in the books? My understanding was that he was miffed when they showed up and wouldn't answer any of his questions as to why they were here, and that later he sided with Bard & co - but to me that's more him being a temperamental bastard than some instance of deep ancestral hate.

100% agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but there's always going to be the sort of reflexive "You're no fun" thing to critique. It's just the way the thing sort of happens, you know, sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If you call yourself a purist and take pride in that, I'm willing to bet you've done a few things to make yourself look like an ass. The criticism of purists in fandom is never "THEY LIKE THE BOOK BETTER, THOSE BASTARDS." Just saying.

Yeah, it's generally 'they called me a heathen because I actually liked the movie', 'they called Peter Jackson a horrible person because he removed Tom Bombadil from LotR/added a whole mess of Radagast to the Hobbit', and so on.
velvet_mace: (Default)

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2013-01-19 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the problem is that you wrote a 4 page meta on how the book and the movie compare (that's some interesting shit). It's that you probably wrote a 4 page meta on how the movie was bad-wrong for not exactly copying the novel, which is frankly a hard read if you enjoyed the movie.

And it is hard to believe that someone actually enjoyed a movie if all they do is talk about how wrong it is and how much better the source material was. How can all that dislike and disappointment remain boxed away and not taint everything? "This was a horrible, terrible movie and it made me want to barf, but the cinematography was wonderful. I can't wait to buy the boxed set!" It just doesn't make sense.

It won't get any purity points, but you can compare canons and point out differences without making one "wrong" and the other "right." They can be judged by their merits as well as by their differences. Frankly, I found some of the changes and additions to be awesome.

But that's kind of like saying "a black guy mugged me, I hate all black guys now".

I'd really prefer anything that takes the "I'm so perfect" shine off of elves. It leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

In any case, people don't like nitpicking because it sounds like you're trying to tell people they shouldn't enjoy a movie. It also sounds pretty snobby, as if you think you could have done better by staying truer to the source material.

I like you, OP, as a fellow purist who still managed to like the LOTR movies (well, other than parts of ROTK...I'm not allowed to talk about parts of ROTK anymore) and loved The Hobbit movie, even if I did have a moment of inner OMG HE WOULD NEVER rage at Thranduil bowing to the dwarves early on. Then I giggled at him riding away on his elk and being a dick, and all was right with the world once more.

This is kind of how I feel about nu!Trek. I always spot and complain about how it's different from TOS and how the feel and/or meaning of certain concept and character traits have gotten so hopelessly confused or obscured in translation (mostly the parts that can't be directly handwaved away by "timeline change!" because it's not like it's a totally separate parallel universe that just happens to be similar to the TOS 'verse, it split off from the TOS 'verse due to a specific change).

That doesn't mean the 2009 movie didn't make me squee all over the place in delight and it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it immensely or that I don't appreciate the new versions of the characters or find them interesting as well. It's just...I like to be reminded that it IS, in fact, very different.

We'll have to see how the movie tackles all that when he comes around again in part 3. Until then, fanon can rock on and keep making lulzy art. :D

I can completely sympathize, OP (not in this particular fandom, but it's the same concept). For me, looking for the differences between (in my case) the comics and the movies is half the fun. Looking for those little nods and easter eggs. It's a blast!

But in some circles, apparently saying "Oh, that happened in -insert source material here-" gets you tied up by your toes. Which sucks. I mean we all love the same characters. I just don't get the point of drawing a hard line between one and the other and saying "IF YOU LIKE IT THAT WAY YOU CAN'T LIKE IT THIS WAY!" That's just silly.

god, fandom's take on thranduil is my favorite thing about the hobbit by a very large and considerable margin.

I'm with you, O.P. It would have made more sense to explain Tharanduil's issues instead of just showing him turning away.

As for purism, fans wouldn't critique if we don't love the (various flavors of) canon, and it give us something to discuss!

I think part of the problem is that you wrote was was "wrong" was it rather than "what was different". But using "wrong" you've already put a negative tone on your essay.

Anyway, as far as purist go, I can't say I've had much good experiences with them. All I remember from when I was in LOTR fandom was them using every opportunity to tell everybody how awful the movies and PJ were and insulting the intelligence of anybody who didn't like the books. I peeked into The Hobbit fandom shortly before the movie came out, saw much of the same thing and made a hasty retreat.

I think it's fine to point out the differences and critique, etc, it's all part of being really into something.

The only thing that bugs me is the way some people feel their role is to 'educate' the rest of fandom about canon. (You know, the kind of people who leave comments on kink meme prompts saying 'x isn't possible because of x in canon'. 'Cos, I must have missed the bit where Tolkien described how they all went at it like bunnies...)

I don't mind people going through the movies in detail and examining the changes, and even voicing their like or dislike of it, as long as it doesn't include an implication of "If you don't think this is a huge traversty then you're an idiot!" coming through.

I try to keep away from critics of the movies because I'm pretty much an unabashed squeeing fangirl, though I love anyone who can find a good way of bringing up backstory like Thranduil's Doriath background in fanfic and explore it in detail (there's a start to a Legolas/Gimli time travel fic on the kink meme where Legolas tells Thorin's company the basics of that - I loved seeing that).
