I can completely sympathize, OP (not in this particular fandom, but it's the same concept). For me, looking for the differences between (in my case) the comics and the movies is half the fun. Looking for those little nods and easter eggs. It's a blast!

But in some circles, apparently saying "Oh, that happened in -insert source material here-" gets you tied up by your toes. Which sucks. I mean we all love the same characters. I just don't get the point of drawing a hard line between one and the other and saying "IF YOU LIKE IT THAT WAY YOU CAN'T LIKE IT THIS WAY!" That's just silly.
