I think part of the problem is that you wrote was was "wrong" was it rather than "what was different". But using "wrong" you've already put a negative tone on your essay.

Anyway, as far as purist go, I can't say I've had much good experiences with them. All I remember from when I was in LOTR fandom was them using every opportunity to tell everybody how awful the movies and PJ were and insulting the intelligence of anybody who didn't like the books. I peeked into The Hobbit fandom shortly before the movie came out, saw much of the same thing and made a hasty retreat.

And maybe OP did think that in her opinion some of the changes were 'wrong', not just different. Since when is it impossible at all to criticise works? Looking at the threads here, it's like nobody has ever been disappointed by a canon they liked, be it by a new episode or an adaptation.

It's possible to be disappointed in a movie adaptation, and to dislike it, and it's fine to criticize it. You can even say it's outright bad, or that the producers seem to have missed the point of the source material entirely (the Constantine movie comes to mind). But those are still your opinions, and while others may share those opinions, it doesn't make the changes wrong. Good or bad, sure, but not right or wrong.
