I don't get it either. I mean, I gravitate to urban fantasy, and first person seems to be the default there anyway, but I've always preferred it. I don't always write in it, because the story doesn't always lend itself to first person, but when it does, you bet your ass I'm going to.

Hell, I was 4200 words into writing a story not long ago before it told me that third person was all wrong and it wanted to be in first. And, yeah, I went back and changed it.

Present tense, however, can sod right off unless it's Charlie Stross or something short.
