I want to like first person. I really do. There's this rarepair I ship and one author writes fanfic for it, but it's all in first person. I thought it's fine, I'll get over it, you just need getting used to it. But I never did.

It's not the same for original material, I can get into it fine, doesn't even faze me. But there's something about fanfiction that I just can't... It's just so uncanny being inside my favorite character's head all the time. I cannot get over it.

If you're like me OP, then I sympathize. It's getting tiresome to be seen as an 'unsophisticated hater' just cause you don't like the style.

That's actually a really good point that I hadn't considered. If the source material for the fandoms in question are visual (movie, television, etc), then third person is more similar to the way you'd consume the canon, as an outside observer with no direct insight into any one character's emotions or thoughts beyond what is visible on the surface. So reading fanfic written in the first person for those fandoms could be somewhat jarring, whereas it could be totally normal for a canon that's experienced differently.

I'm curious, how do people feel about third person omniscient versus third person limited POV?
