I'm a little confused...so are you still reading the fic but just not leaving kudos? like, even if you enjoy a fic that's written in first person will you still not leave kudos?

So some people don't like first person narrative. Old news.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I don't even bother reading first or second person POV fics. First person fics are written far too often like some therapeutic or masturbatory diary, and second person reminds me of those Choose Your Own Adventure books, where reader usually ends up dead in some grotesque manner.

And no, none of my fandoms are canonically in first person POV.

(Now SECOND person - that's worth snubbing :p)

I'm writing a story in first person right now. For a very obscure fandom of mine.

...sorry :'D I hope you don't bump into it accidentally

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally distrust first person (even in published novels), because it more often than not is used as a crutch for the author.

They speak to themselves in first person, so it's easier to put thoughts and words into paper. You can be clipped and terse and unpoetic because your mind is clipped, terse, and unpoetic.

First person is fucking awesome for is it? or it not? reliable narration.

Just like with anything else, it depends on how well written it is.

First person requires an extremely talented author

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all I'm saying, really. Authors have to be gifted to churn out a decent first person story. Unfortunately, 95% of authors are not that talented, and so most first person fic is utter shit.

IDK. :)

My favourite fanfic ever had three different first-person narrators, all with distinct voices. If the writer's talented enough, the text is going to show its worth in any voice.

I do not understand why first person gets so much hate. :/ I get that inexperienced authors tend to gravitate towards it, but that doesn't mean it's always bad.

When I was a kid I used to have a huge preference for first-person stories because it made it easier for me to connect with the protagonist. Nowadays I don't really notice, but a lot of my favorite books are told in first-person and I think are better off that way.

Agreed. Unless the source material is written in first person, I just won't read fanfic that is. It makes my self-insertion radar tingle, and I'm usually right: it's the most easily-identifiable character that gets written that way. The rest of the time, it's just horribly awkward.

I'm not thrilled with first person present tense, but if a story works it works. Not giving the author kudos, especially when they managed to keep me reading past my prejudices, would be incredibly petty of me.
