Feels like every few years some geek feels like they shouldn't be enjoying Roseanne. My guess is the feeling is because at first glance it looks like a "dumb white trash sitcom."

A) Joss Whedon was one of the writers. Remember how Darlene was all into indie comic books and she and her boyfriend were writing/drawing their own? And how DJ wanted to be a director? Heck, Darlene had a poster of the Endless and a Batman:TAS cell in her room. Liking Roseanne adds +1 to your Geek Score. (Disliking it does nothing. There's no such thing as negative points in Geek Score.)

B) The show is smart. And more than that, it's genuine. Roseanne always had a hell of a lot of honest to it, showing people who felt like real people in relationships that looked shockingly like relationships in real life. Yeah, the later seasons got crazy and stupid, but the show was at heart based on showing how funny unsugarcoated life could be, and it did a great job of it.

C) The family loves each other. They fight, scream, storm out, occasionally run away from home or refuse to speak to one other, but they love each other. That's a really comforting thing to see, especially if you grew up in a shouty family. It deals with the feeling of loving very imperfect people (for example, Dan's mother. That episode hit home, even if a lot of it was hilarious).

D) Roseanne was so ridiculously progressive that sometimes I'm still caught by surprise when I watch it now. It's one of the few shows that ever brought up the subject of abortion, and let it be a legitimate option for the woman in question (instead of just mentioning or alluding to it and having the character flat-out refuse), and have the point hammered in by Dan clarifying to his guy friends that while he had his preference about which way it could go, the choice was ultimately Roseanne's, and he would support whatever she chose to do with her own body. It had multiple gay characters, who for the most part, were characters and not stereotypes. They were characters who happened to be gay, not characters defined by their sexuality. And speaking of sexuality, while it was played for laughs, and while she was always kinda dopey and pathetic (and I love her so much), Jackie was a woman who had sex when she wanted to, which was often. There is one episode where her current bf made her feel bad for having slept with so many men, but he was a dick, and that's made pretty clear. And while she's promiscuous, she's not presented as "the sex bunny" the way she would be in most sitcoms.

E) It's a funny show with a whole boatload of hilarious female characters in it. Roseanne and Jackie, Darlene, Becky, Roseanne's mother (she cracks me up every time.) They get to be people and they get to be funny.

+1 to all of this

I mean, the fact that it has John Goodman is enough for me, but still.
