Sounds like your mom needs some intervention before things get out of hand, nonny --- she totally sounds like she's heading down the road to becoming a hoarder. If she flips out after you fold the laundry and give it to her to put away, that will be your tipoff.

My mother is a hoarder, but I've managed to contain her to two areas of the house (her bedroom which is basically her walk-in closet -- she sleeps on the living room couch -- and the basement which isn't a full, finished basement anyway, so when the STUFF gets too moldy, it's all going), but yeah. Your mom is definitely showing some very bad warning signs, anon. Trust me on this. Nip it in the bud.

I have to say I don't think being messy and hoarding are really the same thing...are they? I mean it's one thing to not put stuff away if you have it, that doesn't mean she's adding more stuff to the house...

I really think you are reading too much into what OP said. It just sounds like OP's mom has gotten into a really bad habit, and doesn't realize how it effects everyone else in the house.
