Nope, me neither. It's one of those things though where I can honestly see why people like it - it's good and all - it's just not to my tastes. Same with Harry Potter.

Takes all kinds, ya know? Only an utter jackass would judge you for it.

...not liking a show has to be a secret? O.o

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly. Because if you don't like a show, you're wrong, and the internet will tell you just how wrong. At length. For days.

My "show I just don't get" is Breaking Bad (and to a lesser extent, Battlestar Galactica).

I watched the first season and a half of Breaking Bad and it was good, but it just didn't inspire the level of love that I was expecting. And I enjoyed Battlestar Galactica, but I also thought it had a ton of flaws and didn't eve really adore it like a lot of people do.

Eh, people who judge you that harshly for not liking a tv show are idiots and you shouldn't care what they think.

I love Doctor Who but I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't, and if you don't like it, you don't like it. No amount of "OMG, but it's so good, just try it again!" is going to convince you. In fact, it'll probably just make you resent the series and possibly the fandom itself for being so pushy.

But anyway, yea, not liking something is not the end of the world. I don't often see people who act like it does, but those who do need to take a chill pill.

How would you be 'doing it wrong' if you're simply watching the program? How else would one take in the information...?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the whole mannikin thing kinda freaked me out too much.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like this sort of secret's been cropping up a lot lately.

I suppose there's been some sort of overload/oversaturation that's causing it? Nyar.

Anyway, to your point: it's weird how attached we become to those things we strongly like or dislike, isn't it? Even though we understand on an intellectual level that our love for a particular piece of media is purely subjective, we still have difficulty accepting that others might feel differently about it, and so we try to convince them of the rightness of our own perceptions ("Your thinking is too rigid, and you didn't give this book/movie/TV show enough of a chance! If you stick with it, you'll see how great it is!" "You're not thinking critically about this book/movie/TV show! If you compare it to other media, and consider the following points, you'll see how terrible it is!"). Our interests become so much a part of us that encountering someone with different interests feels almost like a rebuke; as such, we respond defensively.

It's silly, and it's an illusion, but it's so hard not to do it. I think one could study those who would try to convince you that you're "doing it wrong" and, from such research, extrapolate quite a bit to the overall human condition.

...but...

Really, people just lay off. You like what you like, and you dislike what you dislike, and not only is there nothing wrong with it, but nothing (apart from your own experiences and ever-evolving taste) will change it.

This... I also feel like I'm letting down my friends who are all massive whovians.

Join the club. I even saw the episode that's supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, and it was just...awkward and bad.

Meh, it's not for everyone. I love it, but it's a strange little show. No worries, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get irritated when people's reaction to me going "oh I don't like Dr Who/X series" when they've asked me if I watch it is annoying. Then they'll rattle out all the reasons I SHOULD like it or they'll list off other shows I SHOULD like and it's ARGH there's no should about it I just don't like it!

I don't care if I'm a scifi fan and it's science fiction. I don't like it. As a rule I don't like tv shows. I don't hate it, I just don't like it and stop bothering me over it! I literally do not care about the show and only answered 'cause you asked. /rant that is in my head.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, it's OK if you don't like our show. We might not like your show. And I don't buy all that bullshit about how if someone doesn't like something they just don't get it. Diversity is what makes this world a wonderful place. And besides the less people who like The Doctor the smaller the line is for my ride on with him.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
You're not doing it wrong. It's the people who are trying to convince you that you are who are doing it wrong.

Why are you apologizing for not liking a TV show?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
No, you aren't doing it wrong at all. It's pretty cheesy, rather low budget (used to be no budget) sci-fi. It's definitely not going to appeal to everyone. Not even everyone who loves sci-fi.

You mean that you don't like an extremely niche show in space? I mean, I suppose if you were interested in every other sci fi out there, I would look at you in askance, but please, who are you hanging out with that make you feel this way?

Get rid of them and... watch something else. Downton Abbey or something. Paint dry. You've Been Framed.

Eh, it took me ages to warm up to Doctor Who. Like... the better part of two entire seasons, spread out over months of casual viewing, and even then it wasn't until the Saturday night Who viewings stopped happening that I had to admit I had a problem. And I still get kind of embarrassed watching it with people who've never seen it, because it's not like it's never bad, it's just that cumulatively the good is more than enough to make me love it.

Anyway, OP, don't sweat it--if it's not your thing then it's not your thing, and even if it sounds like it could be your thing, you're under no obligation to make a big ol' time commitment to get yourself addicted to it.
