My guess is so that they can look as though they've had very little contact with Twilight in any way. I know someone who does this. She very well knows the proper spelling, she just doesn't want anyone to even assume she's a fan.

Came here to ask exactly this. What is the point of misspelling a name on purpose?

I can see a lot of room for accidentally misspelling her name - one is an atypical misspelling, the other just sounds right with or without the S - but intentionally misspelling? o.O

I've seen this done by people who hate certain political figures.
One of my students would write essays and not capitalize the name of the spanish dictator Franco.
I mean, he was a bad fella, but still... I dunno. Makes me think of not saying Voldemort's name.
