How do you know if it's been done deliberately?

Yeah, I think this secret gives people too much credit for actually knowing how to spell...

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because people will point out that they did it deliberately.

Like, "I know this annoys Twilight fans, so I'm still going to spell it with an s!" I also saw someone say that she didn't "deserve" to have her name capitalized.

Are you sure they do it to the name, people can just use it to refer to her as the owner? Ex: Stephenie Meyer wrote Twilight. Twilight is Stephenie Meyers book.

imo Smeyer(s) is funnier

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same -- well, when they're actually trying to have a discussion about the series, or even blindly bashing it. It makes it look like they haven't done even the basest research to argue. Also when they misspell her name as "Stephanie".

(And since I've had this conversation on this comm before, she spells it that way because she's named after her father Stephen. There are lots of things to complain about with Stephenie Meyer, but she did not deliberately choose a Mary Sue spelling for her name.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I misspell Tolkien's name about a third of the time.

Really, though, there are people who consistently misspell character names when they know the character from written fiction. There are people who will misspell character names in a review of a fic where the name was spelled correctly. Some people really, really, really can't spell. Sucks to be them. Also sucks to be reading something they wrote. Suckiness all around.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that they misspell her first name gives credence to the heuristics argument. "Stephenie" is not how the name is typically spelled. Even if one has done the "basest research," it's still going to be more natural for one to spell the name "Stephanie," and as such it's going to be very easy for one to make that mistake. It's going to be especially easy for people who do not like her or the series, as they are less likely to be invested enough to force themselves to go against ingrained conventions.

People intentionally misspell and un-capitalize her name out of spite?

I had no idea this was a thing. Malicious not-capitalizing and misspelling.

I also had no idea her name was Meyer, not Meyers.

I really don't think they're doing it on purpose. Myers/Meyers is more common than Meyer, and that's probably why people add the "s:" most iterations of the name that they've seen include it.

My opinion, by the way, is based on my own experiences with my maiden name. My family's variant did not have an "s" attached, but the more common variant of it did, so it was not unusual for people to tag the "s" onto my name. They didn't do it to piss me off; they did it because they were relying on cognitive heuristics, which is both understandable and entirely human.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom, but tbh malicious misspelling is something I had never even thought of, in ANY fandom. Does the misspelled name have some insulting undertone or something? (I'm genuinely asking because I'm not a native English speaker + dyslexic, so the eventual joke could go over my head)

LOL, I don't think anyone actually does this. I mean most 4 year olds have grown out of the intentionally-messing-up-someone's-name-as-insult thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure it's similar to people calling a teacher Miss ____ even if she uses Mrs., it just feels more natural so people don't realize it's incorrect oftentimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I easily overlook people who spell names incorrectly--just as I overlook people who spell any word incorrectly. It happens.

But I do get irritated when people do not capitalize names. It just looks so wrong to me when a name isn't capitalized.

I've never seen that used, but I do get annoyed when people make stupid puns out of the names of celebrities they do not like, even if I don't like them either. It's so elementary school D:

(And yeah, it usually is easy to tell because these people make it a habit of pointing out that they were being deliberately "witty")

I don't get it. Why would someone purposely misspell her name? Is it supposed to be an insulting or something? Can someone explain this to me?

I'm not into Twilight enough to keep track of the spelling of the author's name. Any accidental "s"s are just that. Accidental.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-01-27 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I did not know it was Meyer. And that sounds wrong, eyuch. NGL, on the rare occasions I come across mention of her I'm still gonna hear her name as Meyers in my head and not even in a spiteful way. Sorry? I think?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Considering neither her first or surname are the conventional spellings, I think it's understandable people sometimes spell them wrong.

From this secret I assume your the Queen of Douche.
