I've had the first volume of Goodkind's books for years and kept meaning to read it but never found the time. The more I know about it, the less I want to read it.

Any reviews? Especially on the misogyny part.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not read it. Seriously, it is so bad. Not even just on the misogyny part, but in every way.

This is a pretty good repository of quotes that points out certain elements of the series that are not so good: http://sandstormreviews.blogspot.com/2006/08/goodkind-parodies.html

There's spoilers, but, I mean, seriously. Don't miss the evil chicken and the peace protestors.

Oh boy. When you mean bad, you mean bad. And badly written as well. Oh boy.

Thanks for the tip.

All I know of Goodkind is the evil chicken that is not a chicken. And what a glorious not chicken it is.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you should read a little more. I mean, that's definitely the crowning moment, but you're missing out on things like Richard ripping a dude's spinal cord out, and slaughtering peace protestors, quote, "armed only with their hatred for moral clarity."

Man I read a good number of his books before a. I got into the meat of feminism and b. without realizing how much dislike there was for him. I wish I had known before I got so far into them, though I did get far enough to realize where people's hate for him came from.

How to do you feel about rape, constant rape? Whole cities of rape? Demon rape? Lesbian rape? Prison rape?

How do you feel about Objectivism?

If your answer isn't FUCK YEAH I LOVE THOSE THINGS!!!!.... DO NOT READ HIS BOOKS.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaand his books just got downgraded to "will maybe read when I have time" to "thing to prop furniture with".

Thanks for helping me keep a level blood pressure.

You will, however, miss out on the evil chicken that invades people's dreams to feed them socialist propaganda, if you don't.

SA

Did Fox News write this?

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-01-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but I'd wager hard currency Goodkind watched a lot of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd wager good money that Fox News is not libertarian enough for Terry Goodkind and he sneers at people who watch it for being 'sheeple'

Whole cities of rape?

What. Could you just...I mean, what is this?

Soldiers going through a city and raping all of the women. Like, all of them. They formed teams and such to get the job done.

And in the wake of the devastation, one of his female characters sees the raped and mutilated body of a woman she used to know and her reaction is "har har she liked to flirt with soldiers, that's what she gets! hilarious irony!".

What I'm saying is that it's totally realistic and it needed to be described in loving detail, every word.

I was desperate for fantasy as a teen. I'd read anything. Even I had to give these up after a while.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
(anon from above)

Funny, the (female) friend who'd recommended it to me is exactly the same. She's a huuuge fan of fantasy but lately she has started to hate his work.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You know...

I'm reading Steven Erikson's "Deadhouse Gates" right now, and...there's rape. Lots of rape (spoken about, blessedly, not gone over in any amount of detail), because all of the Seven Cities has just erupted in a bloody revolution. But it's treated as being a terrible thing, and not a single POV character has been like, "hyuk hyuk that's what they deserve doop-de-doo!" They've all been like, "WHAT IS THIS SHIT *ANGER*". Thus, while it is disturbing, I am okay with it.

But...what you've described? Fucking Christ. I'm glad I've put off Sword of Shannara. I think I'll be putting it off indefinitely.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, Sword of Shannara is by Terry Brooks. Wizard's First Rule is by Terry Goodkind and is rapetastic. Sword of Shannara is kind of eh but not rapetastic that I can recall.

AYRT

Aha! Thank you for setting me straight! There's so many Terrys in fantasy; I'm always getting them mixed up. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god there are no words for how crazy bad it gets. The insane female characters, the violence against women, the chicken that is not a chicken, and then it gets POLITICAL crazy.
