I don't assume that a fic featuring OCs are inherently bad, I just simply refuse to read it because I read fanfic for canon characters. If I wanted to read about OCs interacting with canon characters, I'd write my own fics.

I just don't see how you avoid using OCs unless your canon is basically in a bottle. There's a limit to how many stories you can tell using ONLY canon characters. I suppose in some canons it's plausible. Battlestar Galactica is pretty isolated, Once Upon a Time literally can't come and go from the town (until recently), Lost has a closed pool of characters... But how much Who fic can you write that only has the Doctor and his companion(s)? Or Bones without a case?

I get that the anti-OC stuff spawns from the stuff where the OC takes over to the detriment of the canon characters, but it feels like the hatred's reached the point where people will condemn a fic for introducing an OC at all, even if the OC's purpose is just to play villain-of-the-week. Which is silly, and limiting.

This. I'm not terribly interested in an OC in a fic if they're there at the expense of the canon characters, but you *have* to have OC's in some fandoms, or it just...gets boring.

I've actually seen someone claim that extreme that posting fic with OCs was "unacceptable" . It got a lot of people saying and explaining why it was stupid. I've also seen someone claimed that fan characters were inherently an insult to the creator because it means the FC creator doesn't think the story is enough. I thought it was a little silly to say that something is insulting to the creator because that's what you see it as. If something is insulting to the creator, they will usually say so.

Really I'm not bothered by people being uninterested. It's when they make assumptions that bothers me (which I have seen people do a lot around some places). Basically the difference between "I'm not really into OC fic" and "I'm so sorry I'm not interested in your shitty Mary Sue self insert fantasy"

LOL what? Doesn't the presence of any fic at all indicate that the story isn't enough? After all, if it was enough, then no one would feel the need to write any fic, whether it included OCs or otherwise.

This! Or there are those fandoms with a super interesting setting and five characters total (Shadow of the Colossus, counting the horse). A fic could be heavily focused on canon (exploring the setting and keeping very close to what makes it unique in canon) while only featuring OCs.
Or with a super interesting setting, a big cast but no canon characters in a given time frame!

This! I've done that myself, going back 100 years to a time of canon we've only heard about, never seen. What are you going to do? Even if you time-traveled a canon character, they'd need someone to interact with!
