I don't think there's any point in forcing yourself to read something you're not enjoying. When I read books, I pretty much have to spend several hours at a time on it, and finish it within a couple of days. So when I'm in the mood for a certain book I need it right then. And if I don't know what I'm in the mood for, I go to a bookstore or a library and I look around until something catches my eye and I feel like it's what I need.

That said, I enjoyed the first couple of Haruki Murakami books I read, but he does tend to use repetitive themes so I got tired of him. And I also really love Shirley Jackson.

Short story collections are excellent, especially anthologies with multiple authors. I'm also fond of Nightmare Magazine. E-magazines are great because they're published works, but still free (or cheap) and on the internet.

Off-topic, but I really like your icon! Where is it from?

It's a Pokemon fanart, but I can't seem to find the original pic. The link to the icon post is in my info, though.

Love Shirley Jackson. Haunting of Hill House is a fantastic, fantastic book.

The scariest part for me was the way Eleanor's sister and brother-in-law were treating her. It was very real and horrifying and Jackson is so good at that. Hits you right in the heart. (I also liked the bonus queer subtext.)

I remember thinking the ending was a bit weird when I first got to it. I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting but after two days of being totally engrossed in it I got to last page and was just like "...h u h..." Though I love it, I like We Have Always Lived in the Castle more. But I think I'm in the minority.

Yes! Eleanor's helplessness and the time she spends in the thankless role of caregiver is really well done in this book.

The queer subtext is fantastic, and there's quite a few Yuletide fics that explore that dynamic on AO3 if you wanna check them out.

I like the ending, partly because it reminds me of Ethan Frome and partly because I see it as another example of Eleanor trying to turn her fantasy narratives into reality.

I have not read anything else by her besides "The Lottery." I should probably remedy that.

Oooh. It never occurred to me to look up fanfic.

Heh. I loathed Ethan Frome in high school. So maybe that explains that.
