This

The comments about pre-pubescents = clean shaven genitals are weird. It's pretty common plus it's a practice of some cultures. Physical maturity is determined by development of the genitals themselves, not the amount of hair present.

Lets not invoke the genital-altering practices of various cultures to prove your point, mmkay? This will only end in tears.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't even thinking about female genital mutilation, but then you had to go and say this.

You unimaginable bastard.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
If not me, someone would have. Probably in detail with links to pictures, because a) people are dicks that way, and b) "other cultures do it" is the shittiest reason for anything, ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
So "other cultures accept transgender people" is a shitty reason to consider that maybe perceptions of trans* individuals are culturally bound?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
DA

While other some culture's acceptance of trans* individuals is a great thing, just the fact that a certain culture does something doesn't make it right or wrong. That's up for you and other people to decide. I honestly don't know how you got that from the anon above you? ?_?

The point I was trying to make (poorly, I'll admit) is that the existence of cultural variation helps to demonstrate that certain things we take for granted as being "correct" are actually social constructs. While it is true that the fact that something is considered acceptable in another culture does not necessarily make it right, it's also true that the fact that something is considered unacceptable in our culture does not necessarily make it wrong.

Same DA here? Hahapfft, that sounds silly.

Makes sense then! I kind of thought that's what /that anon/ was getting at though. Ah well, as long as we agree that societal values are actually social constructs and that people should probably re-examine their beliefs to make sure that they make sense and such.

Shaving hair is a whole lot different than genital mutilation, so let's not even go there.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I really can't believe that you are comparing what someone does to their body hair to actual mutilation. Why don't we just compare having beards to scarification now? It'd be totally analogous in your world, apparently.
