(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:51 am (UTC)(link)I actually think, as long as it is still the canon characters' story, OCs can be very central to it. They can drive the plot, force the canon characters into action, and provide the groundwork for the whole damn thing, and still have the story be all about the canon characters.
I've seen it done. But I do think it takes a level of skill most of us lack.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 02:03 am (UTC)(link)OC writers need to accept that most people are more interested in the canon characters than the OCs. It's hard to accept because it means shoving your ego down and acknowledging that your creation is not the star. Once you can accept this hard truth and learn to work with it and not against it by burdening your OC with a bunch of tropes they don't need in hopes that it will make them more interesting to the readers (but really will just annoy them like hell) then you are one huge step closer to getting people to like your fic and like your OCs. It takes skill but it also takes pulling your ego down a bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 04:35 am (UTC)(link)I think it helped that every chapter I've been keeping focus on the canon characters.
Exactly, yes.
I've never seemed to have a lot of trouble with the ego thing myself, but I think that might be because my ego is wrapped up in the storytelling rather than in the OC, if that makes any sense. I'll sacrifice or rein in the OC if they get intrusive, because I'm too proud to let them kill my story.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)I am very proud of my OCs and I admittedly do have some attachment to them, and that makes me want to do what it takes to make them seem likeable and not annoy people. I don't want people to dislike them and I understand that shoving them in their faces will make people dislike them no matter how many cool little accessories and things I add to them. So I pull back when I need to. I know that I have a bias and they may not be as interesting to me as they are to others. I have to write well and earn it.
