What does "Latin@" mean?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I know that it's a demonym and that it has to do with Latin American ethnicities, but I don't understand why this is being used in place of "Latina" or "Latino".

I DID Google it, but all I got was instances of the word being used, not a definition. Please help?

Tangentially, I've noticed recently (as in the past few months) that the words "white" and "black" when referring to race have started being capitalized more often. I'm not sure which to use.

It's an o and an a all at once.

Get it?

NA

That's pretty stupid. Isn't -o supposed to be inclusive of both sexes if they're in a mixed group?

DA

Yup, but sometimes it feels more inclusive to use the @ (or and x instead of the vowels)

That is stupid. you are stupid for thinking this is a good idea.

DA

Using the -o to include all sexes/genders seems to imply that men are more important/the default.
In my language, it is usually seen as discriminating against women if you use only the male form. I just wish we had a fairly easy version like the @ for Spanish (although I'm not entirely sure how you pronounce it). It would just be less bulky and more inclusive for genderqueer people.

that IS the default in Spanish, though

But how it is in your language =/= how it is for all languages.

da

That's why anon said "seems." And if there are Latino/a/@ people using "Latin@," obviously they take issue with the collective "Latino."

It's probably mostly white folks.

It doesn't only apply to Latin@, though.
(Tod@s, Amig@s, etc.)

Sorry, but you're completely wrong about this one. I follow a ton of Spanish people on social media, and it is used by all of them (for words like anon above points out). And the people I follow are mostly (male) athletes. It's not SJW stuff, it's accepted usage in online Spanish.

DA - plus, the idea that masculine should be all inclusive while feminine is different, other, is a bit of an issue as well. Like using 'man' to refer generically - not meaning human, but man man.
