this...outpouring of concern in this thread really bothers me on so many levels.

there are a lot of people out there in need. they are living hand to mouth, barely making ends meet, suffering from many hard and tragic events and afflictions. they talk on LJ or whatever blog about the hard time they have but because they aren't 'well known fanfic authors', they don't get near the outpouring of such deep concern.

so it appears that only if you're a personality in fandom are you worthy of notice for when you hit hard times.

stay classy, fandoms.

I wasn't sure what it was about this that was bothering me, but you just hit the nail on the head.

I'm sure someone will come along and try to defend it by saying that internet personalities with problems raises awareness for all the rest of the poor slobs who are suffering, but they don't really. All the concern goes to this person or that person who is having such a hard time. Their life is so hard, let's buy them a new laptop! They're in a rough spot, let's start a fandom auction to send them to Comicon! After all, this person in another city/state/country deserves it because they're poor but they write good.

Meanwhile, back in your own neighborhood.... but who gives a shit about them, what do they have to offer the fandom?

OP here

I wouldn't call her an internet personality, but that's because I only know her in context of her kink list, http://eliade.livejournal.com/472331.html, because I follow many kink memes, and while they all link to her list her name is never mentioned. I have used that post as reference over the years, and most of the time I never bothered to check who the author was. Which is to be expected, I know, as her list is public knowledge and on the internet.

As I said to other anon above, I do not feel like we owe her emotional or financial support, particularly since she's been missing for almost two years, or so it seems; but it would be nice to see meme moderators and anybody who links her list mentioning it was made by eliade.

What is this, think of the starving children in Africa? People aren't concerned about somebody they know because of great social justice, they're concerned because they have some social relationship with this person and care what happens to her. At a distance, for a lot of people, but that's the nature of internet-mediated communities. It has nothing to do with raising awareness, and doesn't actually need defense -- unless you think every instances of caring more about people whose lives have touched yours than about random people unknown to you requires defense. And if you do think that, your quarrel is with human nature, and it's not a quarrel you are likely to ever win.

Thank you, you said it so much better than I could have.

hi riva

I don't know the person in question at all, but can't I feel bad for her while also continuing to work at my local women's shelter and feeling bad for other people as well? Just because I hope one person is doing better doesn't mean I wish shit to rain down on everyone else. I support everyone who is having a bad time as best I can. *shrug*

... People matter more to you if they affect your life in a way or another.
That doesn't mean you don't care at all for strangers.

I don't like the worshipping that seems to be the norm in fandom towards other fans (or even the artists), but this above makes sense.

Read up on "monkeyspace."

Yes, there are lots of people who are in dire straits in the world.

But fandom tends to be an insular community. We look after our own. Because, well, that's how human beings work. It's good to try to address the needs of the faceless many, sure, volunteering and donating and the like. But there's nothing wrong with suddenly being aware that someone you know something about, someone who exists in your friendly social sphere, is also in trouble and wanting to help them.

If a writer whose work I enjoyed has a stroke, I'd be more likely to make a donation to his medical bills than I would if some random person I'd never met or encountered in the any way had a stroke. That doesn't make me a bad person--it makes me a person. The writer is someone I have a social connection with, even if it only goes one way. They are someone I "know."

Then again, I guess I'm not really seeing this "outpouring of concern" on this thread. I'm seeing a lot of "Oh, yeah, that's a shame." "Yeah, I worry too." That's a casual sort of concern, not really the hand-writing that must mean that the people feeling concerned are only focusing on this one problem and obviously don't think of the Starving Children In Africa.
