Why not drop a line to Copperbadge and have him mention something in his Radio Free Monday?

+1 this.

Maybe asking if anybody knows where she is? Because as far as I know she hasn't been active on fandom for years (unless she's somewhere other than that journal of hers?)

I don't know who she is, but I feel that way about the girl who did Hyperbole And A Half. Aside from just providing some hilarious writing that always cheered me up or made me think, "Oh, it's not just me, then?" she gave the internet (and my friends group) at least one easily-adaptable catch phrase...and the last I heard, she was struggling with severe depression and just didn't want to do anything. I don't care if she ever starts the comic up again, I just hope she's happy and okay.

It might reassure you to read this article.

It dates from a while back, and it does look like she's getting *lots* of help and support from friends and etc. I haven't seen any news from her in more recent months, but it looks like she's going to be ok.

Thank you. It's good to know she's got people around her to love and support her and that she's doing better.

I never really interacted with her in Buffy fandom back in the day, but I loved her fic. Reprise, a Spike/Riley is fantastic.

Tbh, I'm a little annoyed that her kink list is so slash skewed. I mean, she acknowledged it, but still.

I understand, Anon. I've talked with her some in the last few posts she made, and hoped she was on the upswing but she hasn't posted in forever and...well, I hope she's okay.

If you actually, really can do something - know her in RL or something and have some way of helping, please do. She's a person in need, and if you can help in any way.....

I don't know who this is, but ten-to-one bet, she's lying. Quadruple that if she's asking for money.

REAL TALK

JUST PROVIDING REAL TALK HERE.

You said it, but a lot of us were thinking it.

Maybe she's lying, I couldn't say. Looking at her journal (http://eliade.livejournal.com/) she had some posts over the years about the situation she was in, and then basically disappeared on May 2011. She had a paypal account (I think) where people once donated, but it is not easy to find, and it was in none of the 'recent' posts.

Some of us do know who she is, or know at least one or two reliable RL people who can vouch for her. "Real talk" is all very well, but perhaps you might consider at least asking whether anyone knows about somebody's bona fides before making the accusation?

ETA: To be fair, now that I've followed the link above I can see that more than one person likely did give her money, and perhaps at some point she did ask for help -- I don't have personal knowledge there. But I do know one of the early helpers, and that person's aid was entirely spontaneous, offered (and indeed pressed) without any request having been made. And that the help was offered because of personal and verified knowledge of the situation.

To be perfectly honest, it wouldn't matter whether someone had "a few RL friends" to vouch for the story or if money was never asked for. I've been around the internet for a long time, and EVERY single time a user's personal woes were known in any detail, it turns out their story was either partially or wholly made up. I mean this basically covers my thoughts and experience here:

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/the-lying-disease/Content?oid=15337239

Hence, the odds. I mean, I could be wrong. I'd just lose some money.

It's fine if you want to do something nice for someone or help them out. But it's not your job to solve other people's problems. You don't actually owe someone emotional or financial support because they once wrote a fic you enjoyed reading.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

I have never read her fics, I actually didn't know she was a fic writer. I only found out about her because her kink list gets linked everywhere, http://eliade.livejournal.com/472331.html. I do not feel like I owe her emotional or financial support, just think it would be nice to see meme moderators mentioning the list was made by eliade.

Is she okay?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Who knows, she hasn't posted since May 2011.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
this...outpouring of concern in this thread really bothers me on so many levels.

there are a lot of people out there in need. they are living hand to mouth, barely making ends meet, suffering from many hard and tragic events and afflictions. they talk on LJ or whatever blog about the hard time they have but because they aren't 'well known fanfic authors', they don't get near the outpouring of such deep concern.

so it appears that only if you're a personality in fandom are you worthy of notice for when you hit hard times.

stay classy, fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't sure what it was about this that was bothering me, but you just hit the nail on the head.

I'm sure someone will come along and try to defend it by saying that internet personalities with problems raises awareness for all the rest of the poor slobs who are suffering, but they don't really. All the concern goes to this person or that person who is having such a hard time. Their life is so hard, let's buy them a new laptop! They're in a rough spot, let's start a fandom auction to send them to Comicon! After all, this person in another city/state/country deserves it because they're poor but they write good.

Meanwhile, back in your own neighborhood.... but who gives a shit about them, what do they have to offer the fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

I wouldn't call her an internet personality, but that's because I only know her in context of her kink list, http://eliade.livejournal.com/472331.html, because I follow many kink memes, and while they all link to her list her name is never mentioned. I have used that post as reference over the years, and most of the time I never bothered to check who the author was. Which is to be expected, I know, as her list is public knowledge and on the internet.

As I said to other anon above, I do not feel like we owe her emotional or financial support, particularly since she's been missing for almost two years, or so it seems; but it would be nice to see meme moderators and anybody who links her list mentioning it was made by eliade.

I don't know the person in question at all, but can't I feel bad for her while also continuing to work at my local women's shelter and feeling bad for other people as well? Just because I hope one person is doing better doesn't mean I wish shit to rain down on everyone else. I support everyone who is having a bad time as best I can. *shrug*

... People matter more to you if they affect your life in a way or another.
That doesn't mean you don't care at all for strangers.

I don't like the worshipping that seems to be the norm in fandom towards other fans (or even the artists), but this above makes sense.

Read up on "monkeyspace."

Yes, there are lots of people who are in dire straits in the world.

But fandom tends to be an insular community. We look after our own. Because, well, that's how human beings work. It's good to try to address the needs of the faceless many, sure, volunteering and donating and the like. But there's nothing wrong with suddenly being aware that someone you know something about, someone who exists in your friendly social sphere, is also in trouble and wanting to help them.

If a writer whose work I enjoyed has a stroke, I'd be more likely to make a donation to his medical bills than I would if some random person I'd never met or encountered in the any way had a stroke. That doesn't make me a bad person--it makes me a person. The writer is someone I have a social connection with, even if it only goes one way. They are someone I "know."

Then again, I guess I'm not really seeing this "outpouring of concern" on this thread. I'm seeing a lot of "Oh, yeah, that's a shame." "Yeah, I worry too." That's a casual sort of concern, not really the hand-writing that must mean that the people feeling concerned are only focusing on this one problem and obviously don't think of the Starving Children In Africa.

She makes my heart hurt. So brilliant.
