At what point would bad memory concern you?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
My memory is terrible, but I don't really know how to assess if it is something to be concerned. Everybody I ask answers saying how baaaaad their memory is, until I point out things I can't remember that they can and then they realize my memory is pretty bad, but that still doesn't help me.

For example, I forget TV/movies/books plots all the time. I know nobody remembers perfectly, but I'm talking being unable to properly recall things about a show I watched in December. I can tell you some of the biggest plot points but not all, how they connect, or what else was important, so it's basically impossible to retell you the story (A friend recently asked me to just tell her what happened in a series she is not going to watch and I did a terrible job of it). With movies after a while I have no clue what they were about, and in one or two cases I completely forgot I watched them until I read my movie list.
I also forget what I study (again, I know it happens to everybody) shortly after the tests (I have very good grades despite my horrible memory).
I'm forever writing down things not to forget them, because I can't trust myself to remember I had to do X thing or give someone X message.
I forget stuff from my life, conversations and what I said. One of my friends was offended I didn't remember the conversation that got us talking and eventually to be friends. I'm always telling people the same stuff because I forget I have already done it.

I know that everybody forgets stuff, I just don't know where is the point between normal forgetfulness and something more.
Sometimes it seems kind of pointless to bother watching movies or reading books that I know I'm going to forget. But more important than that, how I'm going to work if I forget everything I studied? I'm 20, what if I keep forgetting more and more things and when I'm old I can't even recognize people? :/ I'm a bit scared tbh.

If I was as forgetful as you, I would be concerned.

That said, forgetting details is normal, and not related to being unable to recognize people and such--entirely different parts of the brain. Since all you seem to be forgetting right now is media and conversations, it's probable that you just aren't paying close enough attention to commit them to memory.

If you're really worried, which it sounds like you are, and you have the funds available - it might be worth doing something like seeing a GP or educational psycologist.

Any other 'symptoms', of things you just aren't as good at, or set you outside the normal range from other people? Because one possibility jumps to mind, but I don't really want to play internet MD here.

Uhm, I can't look people's eyes when we talk? I'm shy but I dunno what else about the normal range I have.

(I want to knooooow, I'm majoring in Psychology actually, and now I'll go crazy trying to figure it out - pun intended-)

A lot of the memory and processing issues you mentioned sounded familiar, and I ended up being diagnosed with dyspraxia.

I'll research that, thanks a bunch :)

To be honest, this seems pretty normal to me. You're not going to remember every conversation you had with your friend, not matter how important particular conversations are. Plus, quite a few people forget what they study. Sometimes it's due to studying habits, sometimes it's just how their memories work.

I'm not quite that bad with the media, but I definitely feel you on forgetting things I did with people, and retelling things over and over again. For me I think it somewhat ties in with my A.D.D., because I'm usually not giving 100% of my attention even when I try to. It's really easy for my thoughts to drift at any given point, unless I'm focusing really hard. But I agree with what other people say, to see a doctor about it and then you can rule out any other reasons you might be forgetting things.

I'm sorry for being a little relieved I'm not the only one that does that though. I'm always getting frustrated because I have a hard time remembering things, what people look like, when I was supposed to do something I just talked about, etc.

not OP, but I have the same kind of memory issues and I've always associated it with my ADD, just as you've said. I don't know 100% if that's what causes it, but I've just always assumed the two issues were related.

I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one that forgets things I've done with people (totally forgot I'd gone to see a movie with a particular friend; granted, it had been a while, but still), and the retelling things. I don't have A.D.D (and I'm old enough that I would think that I'd have been diagnosed long ago).

Don't have a whole lot of concrete memories from my childhood (I remember things, but exact? Not so much), and the above-mentioned memory issues freak me out more than a little. Can't go see a doctor about it because I don't have a good job and can't spare the money.
