I get the daunting thing, totally. My advice: Pick one superhero, let's say Batman, start from 1986 (that was DC's big reboot) and start reading. Let the crossovers and other shit naturally guide you to other superheroes and team comics, like Justice League International or Green Lantern. That's more or less how I got into comics -- I'd intended to just read Batman so I followed this really comprehensive chronology, and as the list led me through the crossovers and the various comics Batman appeared in such as Justice League International I started getting into other comics as well.

That sounds like really good advice. :)

Maybe, but I think reading linearly is bound to bore anyone.

I say find the ancillary material. You want to get into X-Men? Watch one of the animated series. Every time you see a character or a plot or something that looks kind of Easter Egg-y, look for the answer on a website or wiki. Let the blanks fill themselves in and come together.

OT, sort of

Would this work for Marvel, too? I mean, there'd be a different pickup point, obviously, not 1986, but...

Not really. Marvel isn't into the whole reboot thing. They didn't really go through the Silver Age like DC did.

However, if you'd like simpler stories with the same attitudes, you could try reading the Ultimate comics first.

I can't really answer that question, mostly because I don't like Marvel so I don't read them. Their most interesting character is Iron Man and he's only written consistently or well in the movies.

Kind of? The thing is you would have to pick a different point for each character or group you follow, and it's not nearly as clear what you would pick - Marvel doesn't have a single reboot date the way that DC does. For Spider-Man, or the Fantastic Four, it's difficult to say - there are some extremely iconic stories near the very start of each book's run (origin, Green Goblin, Gwen Stacy for Spiderman; Galactus for Fantastic Four) but there's also a lot of wacky, goofy stuff and bad stuff (for instance, the classic Spiderman villain... the Kangaroo! He has the powers of... a kangaroo! Which he gained by going to the Outback and living with kangaroos! Not making any of this up). And you have to kind of be okay with the somewhat dated style to start there - but the events that take place are kind of important to the histories of each character. It's much easier with the X-Men (pretty much just start when Chris Claremont took over) but still it's a complex sort of a thing. And you'd probably have to pick and choose a lot more in terms of the issues you read (although I have to think that this is somewhat true of DC as well, although I haven't read as much of it as Dethtoll).

Honestly, though, the best way to get into Marvel is probably with the Ultimate series, which was a thing that Marvel did where they decided to have an alternate universe sort of a thing with new takes on all their main heroes and their history, from the beginning. Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman are good series with a modern style and they'll give you a good introduction to the broad history of the characters and who they are. So that's what I'd recommend.

Marvel is currently relaunching a lot of their titles as Marvel Now and starting at issue #1, which while not a reboot (at all) is meant to be a place for new fans to start. They are trying to introduce the characters and stories in ways that you don't need to know all the details from the past to get into them.

There are a lot of good series in the Marvel Now but I would highly recommend the Thor: God of Thunder series because it is very Thor-centered without needing to know extraneous details of his world and also very well written.

Avengers is another good title because it starts with the reformation of the Avengers and shows how it was built without having to worry about past incarnations.

Also, Hawkeye, which is up to issue 7 right now is absolutely amazing and they write it so that pretty much every issue can stand on its own. At most they are having two issue arcs.

There are lots of others, too. However if you wanted to go for older comics I would google for recs based on character. There are lots of sites that can guide you to authors that did good runs on a character and often when new authors take over a book they refresh things a bit at the start for new readers.

Also, don't fear using a wiki to fill in the blanks when a new character comes up that you don't know a lot about.

Simple concept yes. But there's a lotttt of green lanterns. And when they added the other spectrums, well...

Shit got large.

I know about the whole thing with the pink lanterns, but why is the female green lantern the only one with a boob/torso window? :\

It makes me sad to know that in all likelihood, this secret was made before they announced that this show had been cancelled ):

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I was hoping it would be posted on the day of the announcement for extra irony purposes, but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Did you somehow know about the cancellation AND this secret in advance??

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Either they're psychic or OP (who submitted it before the cancellation but it only posted now).

I'm going with psychic.

No, they mentioned in the GC threads when the cancellation was announced that they'd made a secret about this, so boom. Guessing this is that secret.

I was mad disappointed when I found out this series was cancelled. God, I hope it at least concludes with a bang.

That is why I will never get into the actual comics and will stick to the movie universes. There is just too much going on. I was going to try and read some Iron Man and Batman. Then I saw the different story lines, universes, characters involved and decided to just enjoy RDJ and Bale.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-02-01 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is DC doesn't HAVE a movie universe. They have some great standalone cartoons, and some shit live actions that are also standalone (The batman moveis do not a universe make and are pretty much exclusionary of most of the more fantastical aspects of DC and even batman)

Yeah, I've used Marvel and DC's animated shows and movies as the lead in to the comics for years. Usually I can pick up any comic with certain characters and know enough basic mythology to keep up (especially Batman and Spider-Man, Christ, the endless media about those two). Without the Green Lantern show, I would have had no idea about the variety of spectrums. Now I'm thinking about hopping into the Blackest Night and Brightest Day runs for kicks.

It's okay, OP. Screenshotting Amazon is an amazing way to make a secret.
