.... I'm not sure I understand this secret ...

I THINK OP means art or fic set on Earth when the fandom is clearly set on not-Earth.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
No -- they mean when a show is set on earth, but everything on earth is named different things. Ne York isn't called New York, London isn't called London, etc.

But DBZ isn't set on "our" Earth (see below).

So, yeah, still not sure what OP means.

They don't like it when people put Real World places in a setting that has its own made up places.

Can somebody translate this?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
OP doesn't like fic writers who write fics about canon works set in fictional universes but who set their fics in universes which merge our world with theirs without warning. Like, Bilbo goes to L.A but is still a hobbit and the author doesn't warn their readers about it (just "AU", or something, I guess).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
No. They use DBZ as an example. DBZ is set on Earth. But DBZ's earth has different names for cities, countries, places, etc. So New York isn't called New York even though it is New York.

Looking at the map on this page shows a world with similar landmasses, but they're in different places. So, even if it IS supposed to be "our" Earth, it's either far in the past or the future, before or after the land masses were where they are now.

Oh, and there are dinosaurs and sentient cats, dogs, pigs, etc.

So, no, DBZ doesn't really take place on Earth as we know it. So there's no reason New York would exist yet/anymore/at all.

Anon, your explanation didn't make it any clearer. :(

Strange secret. If I actually understood it, maybe I'd appreciate it.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
In DBZ the show is set on a earth, but everything on earth has different names. So New York isn't called New York, etc, etc. They're saying they can't stand when people just got with our earth locations when a canon has different names for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Yeah, the OP could've made that clearer. Or more fandom-specific.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here, OP, and apparently I'm not the only one.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-02-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I....don't think that happens much in fandoms other than the one you're referring to. Well, I guess the New York City of the Marvel universe has a lot of landmarks that don't exist in rl, but that's kind of different...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's like calling Metropolis or Gotham City "New York." Like, obviously they're meant to be New York, but in their own worlds, they aren't called that. Unless Metropolis is actually supposed to be Kansas City, but I was never really clear on its proximity to Smallville.
intrigueing: (piper and trickster have no taste)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-02-01 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think Metropolis is supposed to be vaguely on the east coast, except in the show Smallville, where it's in Kansas. But New York et al exists there too.

There was actually a plot point in JLA/Avengers, where the Avengers were confused that the continent of North America was substantially bigger in the DC universe than in the Marvel Universe, because of all the extra space needed to justify all those extra big cities. /nerd

It happens in Pokemon fandom occasionally, assuming I'm not misinterpreting what OP is saying.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Pokémon canon start it, though? I swear I remember references to Hollywood and Minnesota. Assuming we're talking about the English dub of the anime, at any rate.

OT: Chrome recognizes "Pokemon" as a word, but not "Pokémon." What on Earth.

This secret is a little confusing - I once sent a character who lives in "Fake New York" to a real place in upstate New York. Is that the kind of location mixing the OP dislikes? Or is it putting "New York" and New York in the same world?

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-02-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't think that's really minor. I mean they're not using the actual universe setting, they're just taking characters and placing them in this Earth, which I would think would make it an AU.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible the OP is referring to actual published works too. I've seen author's change the names of places for no reason [and to names that, unless you actually knew quite a bit about *all* the places that are mentioned, even in passing, you wouldn't have the best idea of where it was. And they mentioned a lot of places.] beyond ~Ooooh, see? DIFFERENT!'

ANON I UNDERSTAND YOU

This thanksfully doesn't happen often in my main fandoms but this type of detail takes me out of the fic immediately (nitpickers unite!)

Even fics where both New York City and Metropolis exist in the same universe. THEY ARE THE SAME HOW CAN THEY BOTH EXIST.
