I....don't think that happens much in fandoms other than the one you're referring to. Well, I guess the New York City of the Marvel universe has a lot of landmarks that don't exist in rl, but that's kind of different...

I guess it's like calling Metropolis or Gotham City "New York." Like, obviously they're meant to be New York, but in their own worlds, they aren't called that. Unless Metropolis is actually supposed to be Kansas City, but I was never really clear on its proximity to Smallville.

I think Metropolis is supposed to be vaguely on the east coast, except in the show Smallville, where it's in Kansas. But New York et al exists there too.

There was actually a plot point in JLA/Avengers, where the Avengers were confused that the continent of North America was substantially bigger in the DC universe than in the Marvel Universe, because of all the extra space needed to justify all those extra big cities. /nerd

On the other hand, Europe would be substantially smaller, having somewhat fewer small fictional countries.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Was that plot point in canon or in a fic or...?

I am intrigued and would like to learn more; I love media where the writer has clearly put a lot of thought into the world.

It was an actual comic (by Kurt Busiek, one of my favorite comic writers), but it was a Marvel/DC crossover event comic, and Marvel/DC crossovers tend to have a very....questionable canonical status, i.e., the characters seems to always forget that it ever happened after the event is done.

Buseik later got a run on Justice League, which he based part of the plot on JLA/Avengers, and he later built on it again in Trinity.

It happens in Pokemon fandom occasionally, assuming I'm not misinterpreting what OP is saying.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Pokémon canon start it, though? I swear I remember references to Hollywood and Minnesota. Assuming we're talking about the English dub of the anime, at any rate.

OT: Chrome recognizes "Pokemon" as a word, but not "Pokémon." What on Earth.
mercoledi: (WTF?)

Yep. Not to mention Lt. Surge is canonically and explicitly American across the canon 'verses (and not just the dubbed anime)... which doesn't help the confusion most of the fandom seems to face on a daily basis over whether Pokémon World is Earth or Not-Earth. That's probably why a lot of fic writers threw their hands in the air and said, "Fuck it. I do what I want."

...And then Not New York City came along, and that didn't help either.

Tl;dr, canon fucks with Pokémon fans, so all of us would probably piss the OP right off.

Yeah it was "Not New York City" I was thinking of... the anime jokes was a good point, but I didn't think about it since OP was (I think?) talking about fandom and fandom didn't really take that seriously. Lightning American Lt. Surge and Mew being from South America were confusing but mostly ignored by fandom except in meta discussions, and of course there were some other obvious ones like Kanto being named after Kanto, Japan, but most English-speakers weren't familiar enough with Japan for that to be a big issue in English-speaking fandom... but I'm sure OP would go BONKERS reading some of the fanfic that gets written about Unova. Black Adventures straight up calls it New York.
