(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)Personally, I started in ~2007 with the 2005 series, then went back a couple years later to watch the older series. Five is my Doctor now. It sometimes takes me a few minutes to convince people who've been in fandom since before I was born that I know what I'm talking about, but once I've proven myself I've never had a problem.
Really, so long as you don't go around saying that you believe the Doctor is half human, or that the Master being American was a good idea, or that you love Eight but don't know what Big Finish is, I don't think liking the movie is such a bad thing.
tl;dr: Classic Who fandom is pretty cool, so long as you're nice to them. It's New Who fandom that's wanky and awful sometimes (but, amazing other times).

You are really lucky to be in whatever Classic Who fandom circles you are in to give you that impression.
The worst of the Classic Who fans can be the most childish, rigid, stuck-up, stuffy, inflexible, whiny, negative, vicious, dismissive, egotistical, snobbish, rude, derogatory, ultra-purist, puritan, allergic-to-emotions, allergic-to-change, misogynistic, homophobic, closed-minded, leave-it-to-beaver-idolizing, nasty, crude, hate-filled snot-nosed brats I have ever come across in my life.
The worst of the New Who fans are just wanky, immature, ignorant, and character-bash too much, too quickly, based too much on shipping. Their awfulness has never, EVER risen to the suffocating disgustingness of Old Who fans in my experience.
/age-appropriate Old Who fan here.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:51 am (UTC)(link)yep, it's Tumblr I was mostly thinking of when I said that (well, them and some people I've met at a series of theatre screenings of Tom Baker serials near where I used to live). Most friendly and sane fandom I've ever come across on Tumblr.
